We are aware of a serious incident that occurred outside a Church meetinghouse at 660 North Redwood Road in Salt Lake City tonight as a memorial service was being held in the chapel. The Church is cooperating with law enforcement and is grateful for the efforts of first responders.

Until more information is available, all questions about this incident are being directed to the Salt Lake City Police Department. We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy and express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind.

Susan and I have spent the day with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other community members who were involved in the tragic shooting episode that took place in Michigan on Sunday.

The devotion of these faithful members makes me want to be more devoted, and the faithfulness of these good people makes me want to be more faithful.

They have the capacity—because of the eternal perspective of the gospel of Jesus Christ—to learn lessons in tragedy in mortality that prepare them for eternal life.

We are familiar with the admonition that we should mourn with those that mourn. There are broken hearts here in Michigan. My invitation to any and all is to continue to pray for these good people.

September 26, 1963

President John F. Kennedy delivers a foreign policy speech in the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

President Kennedy — who, as a presidential candidate three years earlier, had quoted the Doctrine and Covenants and the Articles of Faith in a speech at the Tabernacle — once again closed his message with an appeal to Latter-day Saint history:

The President gave his speech only 57 days prior to his assassination in Dallas.
