@LandsheerDe@JahBFeray The name Haiti is derived from the indigenous Taíno-Arawak name for the entire island of Hispaniola, which they called Ay-ti 'land of mountains'. It was Christopher Columbus who renamed it La Isla Española ('The Spanish Island') when he arrived in 1492.
@LandsheerDe@JahBFeray The French and Spanish came later and changed the name when they decided to claim the island for themselves. Once the natives got back control of the island they changed the name back to the original name. Map makers were slow to change the name on new maps
