Javstep had a strong first day in Reno today. All three teams (5th, 6th and 8th grades) went 2-0 today to start off the memorial weekend in the Jam On It Reno Memorial Day tournament.

@DelCurrent Also frustrating when parents of the team that get pressed decide to leave a program because they think the pressing and zoning team is more "developed" and winning
Never overlook the players who impact winning in ways most people never notice. Don’t get me wrong… points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks matter. I mean, you can’t win if you can’t score. But so does helping the helper. So does taking away a scorer’s favorite move. So does denying a player 84+ feet for an entire game. So does guarding the ball without getting blown by all night. So does sprinting back in transition, setting a great screen, making the extra pass, getting a hockey assist, diving on the floor, talking on defense, boxing out so somebody else gets the rebound, making the extra rotation, and bringing energy from the bench when your number isn’t called. A lot of the things that SHOW UP in the box score only happen because of the things that DON’T. Winning teams understand that. Great players definitely do too.
I watched some games this weekend of kids who didn’t play “well” but I said during their game “they are about to get offers” and have been since yesterday.
Reason is because of “HOW” they played. They may missed a shot; but their mechanics looked great.
They may missed a layup but they initiated contact and slashed to the rim.
They may have turned the ball over but then went and got it back then kicked it up for an assist.
It’s not about being perfect but it’s about HOW you play the game. Do you look like a winner?
Coaches‼️‼️At ALL levels..
For those that don’t hear it enough…THANK YOU.👏🏾
I stepped away from coaching about two years ago, and now sitting in the stands as a spectator like so many others, I can’t help but notice the deeper side of what coaches truly carry. The late nights. The sacrificed weekends. Running programs, managing operations, answering parents, mentoring athletes, and impacting lives far beyond X’s and O’s or skill development.
Let’s be honest…coaches do it all and deserve way more kudos. People see the games, the wins, the losses, and the results. What they don’t always see are the countless hours spent pouring into young people behind the scenes. The impact stretches far beyond the scoreboard. So to every coach sacrificing time, energy, and pieces of yourselves to help shape the next generation… thank you. Your impact is bigger than you know!

Javstep 16u (2028) boys finished 2-1 this weekend at the MadeHoops Southwest Warmup.
They're becoming battle tested on the Made Hoops West Challenger Circuit, with 3 overtime wins over the past two weekends.
Last weekend, Javstep 16u (2028) went 2-1 at the Made Hoops NorCal Clash in Roseville.
This weekend, we'll have more basketball in Mesa, AZ, at the Made Hoops Southwest Warmup.
Our Javstep 16U team had a strong outing at the MadeHoops NorCal event in Roseville.
This group is ready to take on the challenges on the MadeHoops Circuit this year.
Next stop - Arizona!

@Mike_Jagacki I think both are acceptable depending on playing gap or already denying the ball. I prefer the old way because players won't have to rotate their entire body if they miss the steal/deflection.
I'm thinking more for youth and high school athletes
📚 Best Nuggets From Coaching Books
This one comes from Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy.
Early in his first meeting with the Buccaneers, Dungy told the team:
“I don’t yell a lot. In fact, yelling will be rare.”
“When I get mad, I usually talk at the same volume I’m talking now… and when I get really mad — I whisper.”
And he added something important:
“If you believe you need someone yelling at you to motivate you, you may need to find another team.”
That stuck with me early in my coaching career.
Because a lot of coaches believe authority has to be loud. Dungy showed the opposite.
His leadership wasn’t built on volume —
it was built on clarity, consistency, and standards.
When those things are strong, you don’t need to raise your voice.
Sometimes the quietest message in the room
is the one everyone hears the loudest.
The goal this season wasn't to just make more three-pointers. It was to show the results of the early mornings, the extra reps, and the commitment to consistency.
Had 5 games with 3+ threes made during league play.
Trusting the process.
