Two incredible civil servants who understand AGI and know the value of the people in AISI.
When I come across a challenge at work I ask myself: What would Nate do?

Today we're announcing two senior appointments. @HZoete joins as our new Director, and @NateBurnikell becomes our new Chief Strategy Officer.
Henry de Zoete was instrumental in establishing AISI and already advises government on AI. A successful tech founder and one of the UK's leading voices on AI, he brings a rare mix of technical, commercial & policy expertise.
Nate Burnikell has been at the heart of AISI's work from the beginning, helping build it into a world-leading authority on frontier AI security.
Together, they'll drive forward AISI's mission at a critical time for AI.
A big thank you to our outgoing Interim Director Adam Beaumont, who guided AISI through rapid growth and strengthened its global standing. We wish him every success as he returns to @GCHQ and look forward to continuing to work with him.
Here Amodo's CEO estimates there are <50 engineers in the world, 9 at Amodo, working full-time on the tools we would need for any "trust but verify" with China. San Francisco, how about fewer marginal RL environments startups and more fervor on this?
Last month 1,300+ top AI researchers asked the government to build a means of slowing down the AI race.
But what would that tech actually look like, and is anyone building it already?
Turns out they are; I went to meet them:

I was pleased to invite @billyperrigo from @TIME to our research cluster in Sheffield a few weeks ago.
Our growing team is working hard to create the technologies needed to enable international coordination over the frontier of AI development. Learn more about the work in his piece:

A great piece from @fiiiiiist and @IFP colleagues; lots of suggestions that we should port straight to the UK, especially on verification:
"7. CAISI should co-lead an AI Verification Consortium (AIVEC) with industry to prototype and deploy verification technologies
8. AIVEC should coordinate the creation of AI hardware testbeds and make them available to government, industry, and nonprofit partners
9. AIVEC should launch philanthropically funded prize competitions for AI verification headed by CAISI
10. AIVEC should coordinate the construction of a fully verifiable data center
11. DARPA and the NSF should set up AI verification R&D programs"
The UK can and should be a world leader in AI verification; starting today will make the UK the first mover in this critical field.

A bet on AI verification technologies will give the UK economic and diplomatic leverage. This is an early, open goal for the Burnham government on AI. Read more here:

The Prime Minister, @andyburnham, today asked me to attend Cabinet as Minister for AI, a sign of his deep commitment to AI's importance.
AI is likely the most significant technology in human history. Its impact will dwarf other things.
The best case for it is compelling beyond our dreams: a reindustrialised Britain, stronger national security, public services transformed for the better.
The risks, too, are real: it is right that the British public shares those worries, for jobs, for the pace of change.
The central fact is that it is happening. Nations have a narrow window to decide whether they shape AI or get shaped by it. Britain is in that window right now.
While that window is still open, I will act with pace, I will act with ambition, and I will focus relentlessly on securing British influence in shaping AI.
I will also bring to this job the place I represent - a constituency in Wales, a nation with industry and ambition at its heart, a proud history of punching above its weight on the global stage. A nation which welcomed a 12-year old and his family, gave us the best chance at opportunity, put me in Parliament as Wales' first ethnic minority MP, and now affords me the chance to make a mark in Cabinet. Diolch o galon to everyone in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Tom and team are doing great work on verification. Not sure yet which technology will be most important, but as we've outlined before: having many options ready will help bc we probably want to stack and layer them.
Love seeing people get their hands dirty on real prototypes.
Today, the authors of AI 2027 released AI 2040: Plan A, their positive vision for AI development. Their plan? A verified slowdown of AI development in 2029. For the past 5 months, we’ve been working on these AI verification technologies; here’s the state of play 🧵
AI Verification is becoming mainstream
Pleased to be covered in @TIME alongside @Kristian_Ronn@cp_dunlop and @ohlennart
As AI systems continue to improve, we need to be building tech stacks that allow for coordination over the development and deployment of powerful AIs.
I joined Amodo as it is the place to work on hardware for reducing geopolitical risks to AI. We have projects and funding. We just need more engineers to move even quicker.

Our engineering applications go across the entire company. You can just indicate an interest in AI verification if you want to join my team. Please send me a message if you do so. A primer on AI verification: https://t.co/Cu3Cj5H8am
