During our service year, while I was serving as the Publicity Secretary of MCAN, an offer came from an Abuja-based tech firm seeking a qualified Computer Science graduate. The pay was quite good. They were willing to pay a corps member more than ₦150,000, and this was in 2016.

Several young, intelligent, people applied, and the interviews were conducted over the phone. In the end, a young man—a First Class graduate of Computer Science from Gombe State University, who would later become a very good friend—emerged as the best candidate. I remember the joy I felt when he told me he had been selected.

Do you know what was surprising? Just as he was about to resume in the PPA, he received an even better offer from somewhere else. And do you know what was even more amazing? He had competed against many who attended universities like the University of Salford in Manchester and other foreign institutions in Europe, some of whom were also First Class graduates. Yet he emerged the best.

That young man would later secure a fully funded PhD scholarship in the UK in 2018, specialising in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. He went on to win several awards and emerge as the best research presenter at several conferences across Europe.

If he had not competed like everyone else, perhaps he would not have been selected. He distinguished himself even as a corps member. Wherever you find yourself, never feel inferior. Compete with everyone else and put yourself forward. You never know how or when an opportunity will come your way.

This person is Dr. Sagir Yusuf Muhammad @msyusuf1. Quiet and very reserved, he is one friend I genuinely admire. He now lives in the UK with his family. There is no levels that education and a good grade won’t take you. It is the greatest leveller that closes all gaps in the societal pecking order.

I just saw the VIDEO of Peter Obi and the NDC’s Vice-Presidential Candidate, Kwankwaso, visiting the Ex-Governor of Plateau State, Prof. Jerry Gana, ahead of the election.

I love the strategic moves Kwankwaso has been making across the North, particularly the North Central. This was what Datti-Baba Ahmed couldn't pull off in 2023.

Rent in Nigeria rises roughly 10% a year in most cities, faster in Lagos and Abuja. If you are paying N600,000 a year in rent at 30, and you keep renting with no property to your name until you retire, you will have paid well over N40,000,000 across those years, and at the end of it, you own nothing. Not a single one room or even wall to your name. Just three decades of receipts and a landlord who owns the story of where you lived your whole working life.

A one-room property, or a small self-contained unit, does not need to be your dream house. It needs to be your anchor. The moment you own even one room somewhere on this earth, something shifts. You are no longer 100% dependent on a landlord's mood, a sudden rent increase, or a "the owner wants the house back" phone call that can rearrange your entire life in a month's notice.

Old age without a rent-free roof is one of the most financially dangerous positions a person can be in. Your income naturally slows down as you age. Rent does not slow down with you. A paid-off room, however small, removes one of your biggest expenses right at the exact stage of life when your ability to keep earning is weakest.

You do not need N50,000,000 to start this. You need a fixed monthly amount, redirected consistently, into land, a cooperative housing scheme, or the FMBN National Housing Fund at 6% interest instead of a commercial mortgage at 28%. Small, boring, consistent contributions, started in your 20s or early 30s, are how ordinary income becomes an owned room by 40.

Rent while you build if you have to. Rent out your own place while you live somewhere else if that works better for your income right now. But make sure that somewhere on this earth, your name is on a document that says you own a piece of it.

My father bought his house in his early 30. When life becomes tougher, that house was the only cover we had.

Fortunately, the house was in an estate in Ilorin. That serenity provided the necessary motivation for our academic excellence.

I learnt a life lesson from his early investment in a home for his family.

May Allah rahma continue to shine on his abode. He passed on 16 years ago.

While this is Dr. Joe speaking from experience as a private-sector technocrat who later joined governance, the reality is that many people cannot actually build or own homes in Nigeria at this age today. In fact, many are still struggling to find their footing even at 40. Even if one earns ₦500,000 monthly, it would take serious effort, sacrifices, and discipline to build or own a home.

In Nigeria, we have directors, professors, doctors, and other professionals who are part of the middle class retiring without owning a home. The situation is so heartrending that people can work for decades and still retire without a home of their own. In the past, people somehow managed to own at least a house.

President Tinubu approves a 30–80% salary increase for armed forces personnel, which will take effect from September 1, 2026.

Under the new structure:
Officers above the rank of Colonel (Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals) will receive a 30 per cent increase.

Personnel from Colonel down to Warrant Officer will get a 50 per cent increase.

Rank-and-file personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will enjoy an 80 per cent increase.
