Rep. Jim Nash (R-Waconia) returns to the House floor on May 14th, 2026 with a simple question for the DFL's bill author, Rep. Emma Greenman — a question that exposes exactly how little the authors of HF 5140 actually understand about the firearms they're trying to ban.

Rep. Nash asks Rep. Greenman if she knows what a thumbhole stock does on an Olympic biathlon rifle.

Her answer:

"I have never seen a biathlon. I've never met a biathlon. And I've never seen their gun."

This is the legislator who wrote a sweeping gun ban that would, among countless other things, criminalize the very rifles used by Olympic biathletes — bolt-action, single-round, precision target rifles with thumbhole stocks designed for accuracy and stability.

Rep. Nash then proceeds to explain — patiently — what the biathlon actually is, what kind of rifle is used, and why the thumbhole stock matters. It is one of the most quietly devastating exchanges of the entire floor debate.

The DFL's bill author cannot describe what her own bill bans. That is not a minor technical gap. That is a sign that HF 5140 was never written to be a careful, narrowly-tailored public safety measure — it was written to ban as many firearms as the activist groups behind it could fit into 200 pages.

HF 5140 is the House clone of SF 4067 — the DFL's omnibus gun ban package that would criminalize commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles, certain shotguns and pistols, home-built firearms, Olympic-grade target rifles, and turn hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Minnesotans into felons overnight.

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus is leading the fight against this bill. The 2026 session is in its final hours.
