10 years of offshore detention.
Let this be the last time we mark this anniversary.
I urge you to read some of the devastating stories of people affected by this brutal policy in @ASRC1's report, linked at https://t.co/7hdoVCyqi3
No one on Nauru: a huge step toward dismantling an exceedingly cruel policy that saw 14 deaths & mental health suffering among the worst @MSF had seen.
But 80 people remain on PNG, & the framework endures. It's time to close this chapter once & for all.

@ASRC1 were honoured to host Judge Sayeda Wasiq last week. On how she & women judges of Afghanistan continued despite threats to their lives: “Justice first, even before our safety”.
On #WorldRefugeeDay & every day, thank you to all whose courage & strength uplifts others.
“You want to have a clear record so the country can stand tall.” @DrAliceJEdwards
Australia detains people for 10+ years: even 3 months can be classified as degrading, inhumane treatment or psychological torture.
Maximum timeframes are needed now.

At @ASRC1 we see the most appalling harms being inflicted on people as part of this model - truly, beyond imagination.
This has to end. The government need to evacuate Nauru and PNG now.
🧵#Refugees ‘used like corpses impaled on walls of medieval cities to send a message that they should not try to enter’: listen to @NickMcKim at https://t.co/8jYDQjSRRi.
ALP today thwarted a Bill that evacuated those in desperate need in PNG/Nauru. Why?
The Bill didn't end regional processing. It just recognised our duty of care to those who have been suffering for a decade, providing reprieve and access to care to pursue durable 3rd-country resettlement in safety.
It was compassionate and practical, & designed to save lives.
Of 60+ submissions, only 1 opposes the Evacuation to Safety Bill ending offshoring in Nauru/PNG: Home Affairs.
It’s been 10 years. There is no adequate medical care or transfer. People are suffering and dying.
Take action to end this dark period here: https://t.co/E914NYBO77.
We will continue to press for swift and fair resolution for every person affected by the cruel fast-track regime.
You can find information about the announcement at https://t.co/0WLGKJz4LP, including how to get help.
A momentous occasion: the first @ASRC1 client affected by the TPV/SHEV announcement has received their permanent visa.
At last, and after so much hardship - security and safety.
Lawyers across Australia are receiving heartbreaking calls. People can't understand what is happening or why.
Despite enquiries, authorities have not shared details, including timing, to enable us to properly advise.
This is not how law should be made or administered.
🧵People are now being re-detained despite the Court finding in Dec 22 their visas had been cancelled unlawfully.
They had just been reunited with family incl after years without hope in detention.
The letters suggest they consider leaving Aus.

What intolerable pressure to subject people to.
If #refugees, after years of uncertainty and loss of hope, take up this offer out of desperation, the damage to them and to their families will be irreversible.
There remains a great deal of work to be done, but we hope this is the start of real change.
Alongside refugees & people seeking asylum, we will continue to advocate for fair, efficient, humane solutions for all 31,000 people affected by fast-track.

Finally, access to lasting protection in Australia for 1000s of refugees subjected to the legally & morally indefensible fast-track regime. @ASRC1
Find out how the announcement affects you here: https://t.co/RgalZ3uSPU
To ensure this is meaningful change, we need to see conversion of temporary protection to permanence so all refugees can access reunion, and we need sensible, timely, humane processing.

Imagine waking up every day separated from family, knowing they face poverty, imprisonment, persecution, death in the country you were forced to flee.
The #ALP has ended the unjustifiable policy that kept #refugee families separated.
