@AshRouten @alan_arnette Except that 99% of the 4000ers (in the European Alps) aren’t equipped with fixed ropes from bottom to top, which the 8000ers are...
@alan_arnette Honestly don't understand how you can compare running a marathon to high altitude mountaineering. There are so many more objective risks involved in mountaineering, record seeking or not.
Rapid melting continues far into October, zero-degree line at almost 4000 masl. Substantial prolongation of the melting season, following up the summer heat. A poisonous cocktail 🍹 for #glaciers!
What is happening out here?
Observed today at Glacier de Tsanfleuron
For at least 7000 years (as shown by a dated core) this iconic ice ridge decorated the summit of Piz Murtel.
Between 2005 (left) and 2023 (right) it almost completely disappeared. To me, one of the most impressive shifts in the appearance of mountains observed these last days!
Monday marks 70 years since the first successful ascent of #Everest.
🚨But the world’s tallest mountain, #Chomolungma, “Mother, Goddess of the World” in Tibetan, and #Sagarmatha, “Head above the Clouds” in Nepali – is undergoing unprecedented and largely irreversible change due to #GlobalWarming.
With the @WMO predicting global temperatures to exceed 1.5 degrees of warming, we’re launching an urgent declaration calling on world leaders and businesses to #SaveOurSnow.

@Angelab8848 Maybe too many amateurs who haven't done enough high altitude mountaineering to know what their physical capabilities are? Perhaps many pushing beyond their limits just to summit.
Europa varmes nå opp raskere enn noen annen verdensdel, viser ny rapport 🌡️🌍 Den globale oppvarmingen er koblet til stadig mindre sjøis i polarområdene, blant annet i Svalbard-regionen 👇

@KrisAnnapurna@PraeriePanther I asked whether she did not consider herself to be part if this 8000ers culture about records, fame etc on her instagram post earlier today and she'd deleted it within about 10 minutes 😂
@Off_Piste_Perf The people who have been coming up with suggestions to "close" the mountains are those who don't have an understanding of avalanche hazard and the police have anyway said that it would be impossible to implement...
@Alan_Couzens I don't notice any seasonality in my RHR and I live in the Arctic where we have no sun for 2 months and midnight sun for 2 months of the year 😅
@Angelab8848 kind of fascinating she's decided to go back in winter after she was complaining how freezing cold it was (while sitting around in base camp) when she was there in october 😅
@Angelab8848 Maybe these "record breakers" should consider contributing to establishing the route and fixing ropes if they want to get to the summit instead of just waiting in base camp for the sherpas to do it
