@TheChrisLambert I think there’s a small part of where she is right! The “obsession” of this movie clearly imitates the obsession that folks obsess over their partners in somewhat codependent relationships.
Beside the fact that this is a pagan take, you will also note some Christians who respond as if this were a temporary defeat before Christ returns and reasserts pagan dominance over His enemies. The truth of the matter is even more radical: this itself is the victory.
@agostino_harry@Benthamsbulldog I am not categorically, opposed to the idea of a conscious AI, but these LLMs seem very far from what I imagine conscious to be!
How and how much do insects matter relative to us? It's complicated, but I know this: they're ends in themselves, persons with dignity and rights, and a single one of them matters infinitely more than all your AI buddies combined.
@SpeedWatkins@mariadocujo Does that change your syllogism? I’m a universalist, but if one believes in truly free will, one could imagine some who continue to reject.
@SpeedWatkins@mariadocujo It seems that most folks are defining hell less as a eternal punishment for earthly sin and more as an eternal existence where one freely chooses the torment of not being in relationship with God. This is “eternal punishment” but each moment of punish follows each moment of sin.
People are treating it like a meme but Adorno is just right, and he made clear arguments for each of the three cases.
- Odysseus prefigures the bourgeois individual through rational calculation, self-preservation and mastery over nature
- Jazz embodies the liberal promise of individual freedom within standardized (musical and economical) structures
- Mozart gives an aesthetic form to the utopian reconciliation of individuals beyond domination & the contradictions of early bourgeois society
Just in case it needs to be said: You do not need to be an Effective Altruist or buy into Rethinking Priorities, or anything adjacent to that movement in order to understand that factory farming is one of, if not the most profoundly evil things humanity has done and must end.
@Mouthy_Infidel Even accepting this framing, one could mock this article while still strongly promoting insect wellfare (a la racists who still thought slavery was abhorrent).
@coolterrorism@LEFTHAMILTONIAN@souljagoyteller Do you think Brown would update his thinking based on modern things like ultrasounds or do you think he’d stick with a more 19th century mindset?
