This has been on my mind for a few days. I’ve been waiting for years for this phone but now don’t think I need it / it’s the right one for me.

I’ve been asked by a lot of people on whether or not they should get the iPhone 18 Pro Max or iPhone DUO. If you are in the same boat, then this post is for you! Don’t fall into the hype trap unless you have the funds. Here are some objective truths between both phones:

1. The DUO has worse battery (4800 vs 5500 mAh);
2. Cameras (between 17e & base iPhone 17 quality);
3. Slightly lower sustained A20 Pro performance (either due to smaller VC cooling plate or TDP restrictions);
4. Bad aspect ratio in gaming (got to talk to a few CCs who gamed on the DUO during Apple event, but this is nothing new with current Android foldables);
5. Display durability and device longevity is less than 18 Pro Max (even with their scratch resistant coating);
6. (Subjective) DUO has no FaceID;
7. Lastly, DUO is heavier and more bulky (especially with protection cases).

On the flip side the DUO offers multi-tasking and a portable iPad Mini experience (But ask yourself, how often are you multitasking on your iPad, tablet, or current device?).

Therefore, you are objectively paying more for less if you choose the iPhone DUO over the 18 Pro Max. Hopefully this helps those “average consumers” who are not aware of these details and have been blowing up my DMs.

@cedriclnx I like small to be honest, my issue is the fact it's lacking so many Pro features. Maybe that's fine since I own cameras etc. and an iPad Pro. But I actually would rather it had RAW, Apple Log, a Pro camera & was $2.5k instead

I did love my Google Pixel Fold but again mostly my kids used it as tablet vs me getting any serious work done on it. I’ve always preferred my MBP for work. Or an iPad. I do think I should try it though. I also still don’t need iPadOS is ready for multi tasking let alone iOS

In case you are wondering what the cons of the iPhone Duo are compared to the iPhone 18 Pro, I’ve compiled a list:

Body
• No Action Button
• Not compatible with MagSafe wallets
• 0.48” wider and 0.1” thicker closed (but 1.27” shorter) than 18 Pro
• 0.24” wider and 0.1” thicker closed (but 1.79” shorter) than 18 Pro Max
• 1.52oz (43g) heavier than 18 Pro
• 0.18oz (5g) heavier than 18 Pro Max

Camera Hardware
• 12MP Center Stage front camera instead of 18MP
• No telephoto camera (no 4x or 8x)
• No variable aperture on main camera
• Older, weaker sensor shift OIS system on main camera (we’ve been on 2nd gen OIS since the 14 Pro)
• No adaptive flash (cannot focus beam width)

Camera Features
• No Spatial Photos or Spatial Videos
• No smart focus tracking on front camera (still on rear though)
• No Pro controls (aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and histogram)
• No ProRAW photos
• No ProRes or ProRes RAW video
• No Academy Color Encoding System
• No Apple Log video
• No Genlock support
• No Apple Reference Image (AI tamper detection and edit restoration)

Microphones
• No studio-quality four mic array

Display
• Inner display is actually lower 430 PPI (though outer is the same 460)

Sensors
• No TrueDepth sensors (no Face ID)
• No rear LiDAR

Power
• Does not support USB-PD’s Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS) (why max charge speed is slightly slower)
