Politics Stopped a Police Inquiry into a Cluster of Infant Deaths

The Most Important Legal Case in the History of Canadian Policing

Ottawa Police Detective Helen Grus, a veteran investigator in the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit, was convicted of Discreditable Conduct under Ontario’s Police Services Act on March 25, 2025.

Incredibly, the internal Tribunal Officer found that Detective Grus should have asked for permission before initiating an investigation into an unusual cluster of infant deaths – due to the “political and societal ramifications” of her inquiries, and because she was investigating “public officials”.

The written decision eliminates the right and duty of Canadian police officers to conduct investigations without political interference – or to investigate public officials or politicians without prior permission from above.

If allowed to stand, the Grus decision will undermine public confidence in the independence of police investigations, and cause serving police officers to look the other way when they suspect wrongdoing by ‘public officials’ or see possible crimes that have ‘political ramifications.’

She was investigating a cluster of infant deaths.

She was fired for doing her job.

She & her family were illegally wiretapped.

The investigating officer, that led to the charges against her, sent a threatening email, just hours before she was going to testify.

This is also known as witness tampering. 

He resigned weeks later & no charges were brought against him

This is a politically driven prosecution.

MAID, It became normalized without a fight?

Pretty much.
It happened in slow, deliberate stages, each one sold as “compassion,” “autonomy,” or “fixing a loophole,” and almost nobody pushed back hard enough to stop the momentum:

1. **2015–2016**: Supreme Court strikes down the ban on assisted suicide (Carter decision). Framed strictly as “terminally ill adults with unbearable suffering who are nearing death anyway.” Most Canadians either supported it or stayed quiet.

2. **2019**: Quebec court (Truchon) rules that “reasonably foreseeable death” is unconstitutional. Ottawa doesn’t appeal, just rewrites the law in 2021 to drop the foreseeable-death requirement entirely. Barely any public outrage.

3. **2021–2023**: Bill C-7 passes. MAID now available to people who might live decades more, as long as their condition is “grievous and irremediable.” The disability community screams that safeguards are gone; media mostly frames critics as religious zealots.

4. **2023–2024**: Stories start piling up: veterans with PTSD offered MAID, homeless people, people with diabetes whose only “irremediable condition” is poverty-level insulin access, the Jolene case, etc. Each one gets a brief flare of viral anger, then fades.

5. **2024–2025**: The planned expansion to mental illness alone is delayed (again), but the government still insists it’s coming. Meanwhile, MAID deaths keep climbing (over 13,000 in 2022, 15,000+ in 2023, heading higher). It’s now ~4–5 % of all deaths in Canada, higher in some provinces.

At every step, the pushback was fragmented: disability advocates, some doctors, a handful of MPs, faith groups. But there was never a mass movement, never millions in the streets, never a sustained national revolt. The media mostly parroted “trust the experts” and “it’s about choice,” and the official opposition (Conservatives) criticized but never promised outright repeal.

So yeah… it got normalized almost without a real fight. One “reasonable” expansion at a time, until offering death as a solution to a broken healthcare system feels like just another medical service.
