On September 3, 1838, Frederick Douglass escaped slavery and began the journey that would transform him into one of the most influential abolitionists of the nineteenth century. Born enslaved in Maryland around 1818, Douglass had already endured separation from his family, physical violence and years of forced labor. He had also secretly learned to read and write, an education that helped him understand the system controlling his life and strengthened his determination to escape it. After an earlier escape attempt failed, Douglass tried again at about 20 years old, knowing that capture could mean severe punishment or being sold farther South.

Disguised as a sailor and carrying identification papers borrowed from a free Black seaman, Douglass boarded a train from Baltimore and traveled north through a combination of rail and ferry routes. Less than 24 hours after leaving Baltimore, he reached New York City. Even there, however, freedom was uncertain. Slave catchers operated in Northern states, and under American law Douglass could still be captured and returned to slavery. Anna Murray, a free Black woman who had helped him prepare for his escape, soon joined him in New York. They married on September 15, 1838, and eventually settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where Frederick adopted the surname Douglass.

His escape was only the beginning. Douglass became a powerful speaker in the abolitionist movement, using his own experiences to expose the brutality of slavery before audiences that sometimes doubted a formerly enslaved Black man could speak with such intelligence and command. In 1845, he published Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, providing names, places and details that made his identity impossible to hide. Publication increased the danger of recapture, forcing him to spend time in Britain and Ireland until supporters purchased his legal freedom in 1846.

Douglass would spend the rest of his life fighting far beyond the abolition of slavery. He advocated for Black citizenship, voting rights, women's rights and equal treatment under the law, advised President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, recruited Black soldiers for the Union Army and later held federal government positions. September 3, 1838 was therefore more than the day one man escaped bondage. It was the beginning of a public life that would force generations of Americans to confront the meaning of freedom in a country that had denied it to millions.

Look at this Daily Times front page. Arms raised, agbada flowing, the headline screams AWOLOWO IS FREE.

He had just come out of Calabar Prison after serving almost four years of a 10 year sentence. The 1963 treasonable felony case was one many Nigerians at the time called political.
