The India Against Corruption movement began in 2011, exactly three years before the 2014 general election. Today, we are standing at almost the same point before the next election.

Back then, many people felt the UPA government had become arrogant. It was accused of ignoring public sentiment, using heavy-handed policing against protesters, and even taking action against satirists and cartoonists. Corruption allegations dominated headlines, and for many voters, the government’s credibility had eroded.

When I look at recent controversies around issues like ethanol policy, events in Madhya Pradesh, paper leaks, and other public grievances, I see some striking similarities. The biggest similarity, in my view, is not any single issue. It is the growing perception that the government is becoming less willing to listen to criticism.

History does not repeat itself exactly, and three years is a long time in politics. Public opinion can change, governments can course-correct, and opposition movements can either gain momentum or fade away.

But as of today, Modi 3.0 reminds me in some ways of UPA 2.0. Not because the two governments are identical, but because both appear, at least to many critics, to be facing a similar challenge: the perception that prolonged power has led to complacency and arrogance. Whether that perception grows or the government successfully addresses it over the next three years could have a major impact on the next election.
