History They Never Taught

Part 6

Most Indians know Bhagat Singh.

The hat. The moustache. The Assembly bomb. The gallows.

But there was much more to Bhagat Singh than the image that became famous.

He was a serious reader, writer, organiser and political thinker.

He read extensively about history, economics, revolution and political movements across the world.

And he inherited a revolutionary movement built by the generation before him.

After the Kakori case, the HRA had been devastated. Bismil, Ashfaqullah, Lahiri and Roshan Singh had been executed.

But the movement did not die.

In September 1928, young revolutionaries met secretly at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

The organisation was reorganised as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, HSRA.

Chandrashekhar Azad became one of its principal leaders.

Bhagat Singh emerged as one of its most important thinkers and organisers.

Then came the event that changed everything.

On 30 October 1928, Lala Lajpat Rai led a protest in Lahore against the Simon Commission.

The police launched a lathi charge.

Lajpat Rai was badly injured. He died on 17 November.

Bhagat Singh and his comrades decided to avenge his death.

Their target was police officer James A. Scott, whom they held responsible for the lathi charge.

But on 17 December 1928, they mistook Assistant Superintendent J.P. Saunders for Scott.

Saunders was shot dead.

The following day, Lahore woke up to HSRA posters declaring:

“J.P. SAUNDERS IS DEAD; LALA LAJPAT RAI IS AVENGED.”

Bhagat Singh was now one of the most wanted men in British India.

He cut his hair and beard and escaped Lahore in disguise.

He could have disappeared.

Instead, just months later, he deliberately walked into another confrontation with the British.

This time he wanted the whole country to hear what the revolutionaries had to say.

On 8 April 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt entered the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi carrying bombs.

They threw them.

And then did something extraordinary.

They did not run.

They stayed.

They shouted slogans.

They scattered leaflets.

And they allowed themselves to be arrested.

Why would two wanted revolutionaries deliberately surrender to the British?

That is where the Bhagat Singh story becomes even more fascinating.

We know Bhagat Singh.

But do we know the husband and wife who risked everything alongside him?

Bhagwati Charan Vohra and Durga Devi Vohra.

To the revolutionaries, she was simply Durga Bhabhi.

Bhagwati Charan Vohra was one of the important thinkers and organisers of the revolutionary movement around Bhagat Singh and the HSRA.

Durga was his wife.

And theirs became one of the most remarkable partnerships of India's freedom struggle.

In December 1928, Lahore was under intense police watch.

Saunders had been killed and the British were hunting for Bhagat Singh.

Getting him out of Lahore seemed almost impossible.

Then Durga Bhabhi stepped in.

Bhagat Singh cut his hair and beard and dressed in Western clothes.

Durga posed as his wife.

But she did something even more extraordinary.

She took her little son Sachindra with them.

Imagine the scene.

One of the most wanted revolutionaries in British India walking through Lahore railway station disguised as a respectable young husband.

Beside him was Durga Bhabhi.

With them was her little child.

Rajguru accompanied them, posing as their servant.

The disguise worked.

They passed through the police cordon and boarded the train.

Bhagat Singh escaped Lahore.

Meanwhile, Durga's real husband was himself deeply involved in the revolutionary underground.

Bhagwati Charan Vohra was an organiser and intellectual force within the HSRA. Their home, resources and lives had become intertwined with the revolutionary movement.

Then tragedy struck.

On 28 May 1930, Vohra was testing a bomb on the banks of the Ravi near Lahore, connected with preparations for an attempt to rescue Bhagat Singh and his imprisoned comrades.

The bomb exploded prematurely.

Bhagwati Charan Vohra died.

He was just 26.

Durga Bhabhi was left with a young child.

But she did not abandon the struggle.

She remained involved in revolutionary activity and even participated in armed action against British officials.

And then came perhaps the most unexpected chapter of her life.

After the revolutionary years, Durga Bhabhi gradually withdrew from politics.

She turned towards education, established a school in Lucknow and spent much of her later life away from the fame surrounding the men with whom she had once fought.

The young woman who had once walked through a railway station under the eyes of British police, carrying her child and pretending Bhagat Singh was her husband, lived until 1999.

She was 92.

We remember Bhagat Singh.

We should also remember the family that risked everything beside him.

அந்த ஜெயிலர் பெயர் மிஞ்ஜேல்... ரொம்ப மோசமானவன்.. கொடூரக்காரன்..!

ஜெயிலுக்குள் கொண்டு செல்லும்போதே, கை, கால்களை கட்டி தெருவெல்லாம் இழுத்து சென்றுள்ளனர்..!

வஉசிக்கு சிறைக்குள் தனி ரூம்.. ஆனால் அதில் காற்று வசதி இல்லை.. சுத்தமும் சுகாதாரமும் இல்லை.. கால்களில் விலங்கு பூட்டப்பட்டுதான் வஉசியை அடைத்துவைத்தனர்..!

ஜெயிலுக்குள் சென்றதுமே தலையை மொட்டை அடித்திருக்கிறார்கள்.. ஒரே ஒரு டிரஸ் தந்திருக்கிறார்கள்.. அதுகூட சாக்குப் பையால் தைத்தது.

ஒருநாளைக்கு ஆயிரம் பேருக்கு சாப்பாடு போட்டவருக்கு, ஜெயிலில் கூழ் தந்தார்கள்.. அதுவும் புளித்து போயிருந்தது.. சில சமயம் அந்த கூழில் புழுக்கள் மிதக்குமாம்..!

உடல்நிலை மோசமானதால், ஒருநாள் மட்டும் அரசி சோறு கேட்டாராம் வஉசி.. அதற்காக 3 நாளைக்கு, அந்த கூழை கூட தராமல் பட்டினி போட்டுள்ளான் அந்த ஜெயிலர் மிஞ்ஜேல்.

சணல் கிழிக்கும் மிஷினை கையாலேயே சுற்ற வேண்டும்.. இதுதான் வஉசிக்கு தரப்பட்ட முதல் வேலை... அப்படி செய்ததால், வஉசியின் கைகளில் உள்ள தோல் கிழிந்து ரத்தம் கொட்டி உள்ளது.. அதை பார்த்து ஒரு கைதி, மனசு கேட்காமல் ஓடிவந்து மிஷின் சுற்றுவதை தடுத்துள்ளார்..

ஆனால் அந்த கைதியை அடித்து நொறுக்கினான் மிஞ்ஜேல்... பிறகு, கையால் செய்யும் வேலைகளை தராமல், செக்கிழுக்கும் வேலையை தந்துள்ளனர்.. அதாவது மாட்டுக்கு பதில் வஉசியை பூட்டினர்.. அதுவும் உச்சிவெயிலில்.. இதில் மயங்கி கீழே விழுந்துவிட்டால், சவுக்காலேயே அடிப்பார்கள்..!

வஉசியின் மதிப்பு தெரிந்த கைதி ஒருவர், தன்னுடைய தலைக்கு மேல் 2 கைகளையும் கூப்பி "வணக்கம் ஐயா" என்றார்.. அவ்வளவுதான், ஜெயிலுக்குள் கலவரம் வெடித்து, ஒரு கைதி துப்பாக்கி சூட்டில் இறக்குமளவுக்கு பிரச்சனை செய்துவிட்டான் அந்த ஜெயிலர்.

வஉசி விடுதலை செய்யப்பட்டும் தன்னுடைய வக்கீல் பணியை தொடர முடியாத அளவுக்கு லைசென்ஸ் பிடுங்கிவிட்டனர்.. ஒரு அரிசி கடையில் வேலை பார்த்தார்.. நாள் முழுக்க வேலை பார்த்துவிட்டு, 4 ஆழாக்கு அரிசியோடு வீட்டுக்கு போவாராம்.. இந்த விஷயம் தெரிந்த அந்த மளிகைக் கடைக்கு சீல் வைத்து விட்டனர் பிரிட்டிஷ் அதிகாரிகள்..!

அரை வயிற்று கஞ்சிக்குகூட கஷ்டப்படும் நிலை வந்ததால்தான், தலையில் மண்ணெண்ணெய் சுமந்து விற்றுள்ளார்...!

இதைவிட கொடுமை, தன்னுடைய வக்கீல் உரிமத்தை மீட்டெடுக்க கோர்ட்டில் வாதாடி உதவ வேண்டும் என்று வஉசி கேட்டதற்கு, மூத்த வக்கீலான மூதறிஞர் ராஜாஜி மறுத்துவிட்டாராம்.

சில சமயம் காந்தியை விட்டுத்தராமலும், சில சமயம் காந்தியின் கொள்கைகளை ஏற்க முடியாமலும் எதிர்த்துள்ளார் வஉசி..!

வஉசி குடும்பம் வறுமையில் உள்ளதை கேள்விப்பட்டு, தென் ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் உள்ள தமிழர்கள், 5000 ரூபாய் நிதி திரட்டி காந்தியிடம் தந்திருக்கிறார்கள்.. "எப்படியாவது வஉசியிடம் இந்த பணத்தை சேர்த்துவிடுங்கள்" என்றும் சொல்லி உள்ளனர்.. லெட்டர் மேல் லெட்டர் போட்டும் காந்திக்கு ஞாபகப்படுத்தி கொண்டே இருந்தனர்..!

ஆனால் அந்த பணத்தை காந்தி, வஉசிக்கு தரவே இல்லையாம்.. "காந்தி கணக்கு" என்று நாம் சொல்கிறோமே.. அது இதுதான்! (திலகர், இந்த விஷயத்தில் தலையிட்டு பஞ்சாயத்து செய்து, அந்த பணத்தை வஉசிக்கு பெற்று தந்தது தனி கதை)

வஉசிக்கு இணையான ஒரு தியாகியோ, போர்க்குணமுள்ள ஒரு தலைவரோ இந்திய அரசியலிலேயே கிடையாது. ஆனாலும் சொந்த கட்சியில் உரிய மரியாதையை, அவர் இறந்தும்கூட தராதது வருந்தத்தக்கது.. சில வழக்குகளை எதிர் கொள்வதற்கும் கூட அவருக்கு காங்கிரஸ் உதவவில்லை என்பது கசப்பான உண்மை..!

உண்மையை சொல்வதானால், பிரிட்டிஷ் அரசின் ஒடுக்குமுறைக்கு ஆளாகி சீரழிந்ததைவிட, சொந்த கட்சியின் துரோகத்தால்தான் அதிகம் துவண்டுபோனார் வஉசி..!

பல்லாண்டு காலமாய் அடிமைப்படுத்தியிருந்த வெள்ளையர்களுக்கு எதிராகக் கப்பல் விட்ட பெருமை இந்தியாவிலேயே தமிழன் வஉசிக்குதான் உண்டு..!

இந்த தேசத்தின் தலைவராக உயர்ந்திருக்க கூடியவர் வஉசி..

இனியாகிலும் "வஉசி கப்பல் ஓட்டினார், செக்கிழுத்தார்" என்பதை மட்டுமே சொல்லி சுருக்கிவிடாமல், அவருடைய சமூக நீதி கொள்கையை மக்களிடையே, இன்றைய இளைஞர்கள் அழுத்தமாக பரப்ப செய்ய வேண்டும்..!

தமிழர்களை மட்டுப்படுத்தவும், ஏளனப்படுத்தவும், யாருக்குமே தகுதி கிடையாது என்பதையும் செவிப்பறையில் ஓங்கி அறைந்து சொல்ல வேண்டும்..!

Today, we celebrate the birthday of one of the greatest emperors to have ruled Bharat, Rajendra Chola. He made his mark not only through extraordinary military victories, from the Ganga to Kadaram, but also through his vision as a statesman, administrator, temple builder and patron of learning and Dharma.

His reign carried Chola power and prestige far beyond the shores of India, while leaving behind an enduring legacy at home. A truly remarkable emperor whose achievements continue to inspire us a thousand years later.

On this day, exactly 101 years ago, the 8 Down Train from Shahjahanpur to Lucknow was approaching the town of Kakori , when the emergency chain was pulled by a member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. They looted almost 8,000 Indian rupees to fund their fight against the British.
It was a daring, well-planned attack which was completely successful. The passengers were not attacked or robbed, though one died in an accidental gun discharge.
It was masterminded by Ram Prasad Bismil & Ashfaqullah Khan though almost 40 people were arrested for the incident. The British were especially hard on the Kakori conspirators as they feared the intellect & scale of planning. Most of the participants were betrayed by informants.
Bismil, Khan, Roshan Singh & Rajendra Nath Lahiri were sentenced to death, 2 were transported to Kala Paani and the rest were jailed in India. Despite the efforts of GB Pant, Motilal Nehru, Malviya and many others, the British government did not relent on the sentence.
The Kakori train attack was a landmark in our freedom struggle & a huge blow against the British empire.
One more story. Almost all the leaders were betrayed and arrested, and the only one of the Hindustan Republican Association leaders who managed to escape the British was Chandrashekhar Azad. He took off for Jhansi, where he trained as a driver and mechanic in the Bundelkhand Motor Company.
In those days, cars were usually started by handles which one had to turn, and Azad badly hurt his hand trying to crank start a car. The hand had swollen up and his friends took him to the local doctor, who advised an operation under anaesthesia.
Azad refused, not knowing what he would blurt under anaesthesia but finally agreed when the pain became unbearable. Afterwards, the doc said it would heal & then quietly added that he would be delighted to see those hands work once again for India's freedom.
They never met again

At just 16, Saraswathi Rajamani disguised herself as a boy, risked her life, and even took a bullet to save Subhas Chandra Bose.

While many followed Mahatma Gandhi’s path, she chose her own.

A forgotten hero of India’s freedom struggle—her story deserves to be remembered, shared, and celebrated.
