My vote on Brexit was affected by disinformation. I voted Remain because I was told if Leave won there would be terrible consequences.
The BoE Governor told me he would raise interest rates - he lowered them.
The Chancellor said he'd have an emergency budget - he didn't.
The Treasury said unemployment would go up - it went down.
Goldman Sachs and others said they would pull out of Britain - they spent billions on new HQs
The Chief Executive of the NHS Alliance said there would be an epidemic of super-gonorrhoea.
As for foreign interference - The EU, the US and Irish Presidents etc etc all weighed in on the side of Remain.
I cannot abide this endless parade of Tory ex-PMs impotently advocating for Based policy and saying that they tried really hard to do it in office, but it would have meant upsetting the civil service & passing legislation so what can you do?
Somehow it’s always astounding just how dire our political class is. They’re out of ideas and out of their depth, hoping 1970s philosophies and 1980s solutions will solve 2020s problems. It’s completely depressing that we’re stuck with such low-calibre politicians.
If you want Christendom back, go to Church. I know the churches are mostly full of awful people but that’s no excuse. Go to church. Demand Christian doctrine and the liturgy that embodies it. Demand all the things that Christianity gave to civilisation. Choirs, architecture, schools, music, faith hope and charity.
All these things will return but only if you go to church.
I’m sorry but how unfathomably thick do you have to be to stay in, and vote for, this party for decades and only now realise they’re a bunch of sectarian islamic fanatics and cult-left nutters. Didn’t you notice the writing on the wall when, say, the deputy leader praised the genocidal jihadist massacre of Jews then got promoted for it? Or when the party spent years calling our unbelievably tolerant society ‘white supremacist’? Mind blowing.
Andy Verity deserves a lot of recognition for his role bringing justice to the Libor traders who were unfairly thrown under the bus by their employers after the GFC.
This was called "normal" until about 5 minutes ago. And that it's now not is a huge part of the explanation for the collapsing birth rate. Humans are not supposed to raise their young as isolated 1-2 adult units, but within a whole intergenerational ecosystem.
“If there is a single most deplorable intellectual failing on the conservative side, it lies in reducing every question of law, constitution, culture and society to a question of economics.”
Sir Roger Scruton
Was watching a 1977 edition of Mastermind on BBC Four last night. The breadth of knowledge of the classics, Bible, history, art, etc was astonishing. The questions were extremely tough. Despite more people having degrees than ever, our society is genuinely as dumb as rocks.
The best thing about Tottenham (where I grew up) being exposed to a wide audience as welfare ground zero is that it helps a case I often make on this platform. I didn’t need the data to tell me that almost 30K households in David Lammy’s constituency - the home of rioting, crime, social decay, and disturbing demographics - were claiming UC or the benefits that came before it, because the people in a place like Tottenham (which has the largest welfare bill of any constituency, at £624.9 million) will *just tell you*.
We imagine topics like personal finances (and especially benefits) to be taboo and something that, thanks to good old British reservedness, people would never dare openly discuss. But the people in a place like Tottenham are not British. They do not share our sensibilities.
The Somalis, Eritreans, Nigerians, Turks, Kurds, Albanians and others in Tottenham will straight up tell you about the various benefits they’re claiming. They’ll even tell you about their dodgy DLA/PIP claims and the various ways in which they scam the system. They’ll tell you about their Motability car and the fraudulent way they obtained it. They’ll openly tell you about their “friend from my village” who works at the council’s housing department and who they bunged £10K cash to get a nicer social housing property with more bedrooms and a garden. The fraud is out in the open and totally normalised.
Yet when I describe this phenomenon to faux leftist white middle-class people, they instantly dismiss it as the stuff of far-right conspiracies theories. I understand why they instinctively do so, because this is behaviour that is totally alien to us British people (with some exceptions for the underclass - but even they’re more savvy and secretive than the Somalis et al when it comes to their benefit claims).
The reason middle-class Sensibles™ can comfortably dismiss what I am describing, is because they do not live among the “diversity” the claim to love. They do not have socially housed Somalian neighbours who openly describe how they got three of their kids diagnosed with ADHD by using a online Conners Rating Scale and harassing their GP for a CAMHS referral, and how they obtained PIP for their “trauma” from the war back home, and their Motability car.
But, to those dismissive people, I say respectfully: listen to those of us who know what we are talking about and have direct “lived experience” of this stuff. The people we have imported over the last thirty or so years are not like us and never will be. They do not share our sensibilities. If I tell you about the kids in my school discussing the new cars their mums were driving and how they “got it free from like the government and dat”, or Turkish neighbours gloating that they’ve managed to secure DLA for young Hasan, Ali and Mehmet (a hat-trick!), I really am not making it up.
I’m glad everyone is discussing the scale of benefit claims in places like Tottenham, Edmonton, Hackney, and elsewhere. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
When you wonder whether the Tory party has reflected on its failures, begun remaking itself for the future, and rid itself of the rotten core, ask yourself: why has Penny Mordaunt been picked as a candidate again?
The leader has changed. The people running the show have not.
@BenedictSpence The sword carrying obvs.
They are the same as Labour. They just think it is about who has the best PR team.
The uniparty continue to ruin the country, without any consequence to themselves.
