Joint Statement: Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year.

After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards.

I am unreasonably excited about self-driving. It will be the first technology in many decades to visibly terraform outdoor physical spaces and way of life. Less parked cars. Less parking lots. Much greater safety for people in and out of cars. Less noise pollution. More space reclaimed for humans. Human brain cycles and attention capital freed up from “lane following” to other pursuits. Cheaper, faster, programmable delivery of physical items and goods. It won’t happen overnight but there will be the era before and the era after.

Met a Meta AI researcher.

He studied Physics in China, came to the US for a PhD in Physics, and then fell in love with AI, despite never having studied computer science.

He watched Andrej Karpathy and Andrew Ng, bought a GPU, read every arXiv paper title daily, and dived into the ones that interested him. Eventually, he published a few first-author papers at top AI conferences without any supervisors, and later transferred to his university’s AI lab.

You can just do things.

The discourse that Sundar rose to CEO of Google because he’s “low ego” disappoints me.

He was also incredibly good at his job and saved Google’s business 3x times.

– Google Toolbar in 04-06 saved Google by recapturing search volume from IE

– Launched Chrome in 08 and made it the most used browser in the world, saving Search again

– Built ChromeOS into a >50% market leader in EDU with the cheapest laptops ever, Chromebooks

– Made Chrome successful on mobile

– Negotiated with OEMs and scaled Android to 1B+ users, saving Google again

– Took over all of Apps (Docs / Drive) and then Search

– Was rumored to be courted by Twitter and Microsoft for the CEO gig

Oversimplifying it to “low ego” diminished the fact that he was perhaps the most impactful and most cross functional leader at Google.

He was the most competent one for the job.
