FIVE-DAY BANKING: A FAIR AND TIMELY NEED

India’s financial system runs on the commitment of its banking professionals. *During national challenges—from the extraordinary workload during demonetisation to keeping essential banking services operational throughout the COVID-19 pandemic—bank employees stood firmly with the nation.*

They have consistently kept the economy moving when it mattered most.

Today, five-day banking is not merely about an additional day off. It is about modernisation, productivity, work-life balance and recognising the contribution of banking professionals.

*The Indian Banks’ Association submitted the proposal for five-day banking in July 2023. Yet, more than three years later, its implementation is still awaited*.

*We stood with the nation when it needed us most. Now, it is time for the nation to stand with its banking professionals*.

आपने जिस बेबाकी और निष्पक्षता के साथ अपनी बात रखी और बैंककर्मियों की जायज़ मांगों तथा वर्तमान हालात से देश को अवगत कराने का साहस दिखाया, उसके लिए हम सभी बैंककर्मी आपका दिल से आभार व्यक्त करते हैं।

दुर्भाग्य की बात है कि कुछ बड़े मीडिया हाउस और तथाकथित “गोदी मीडिया” आम बैंकर्स को ऐसे प्रस्तुत कर रहे हैं, मानो देश की सारी समस्याओं की वजह बैंककर्मी ही हों। कभी हमें जनता विरोधी, कभी देश विरोधी और कभी आम लोगों की परेशानियों का जिम्मेदार बताया जा रहा है।

सवाल सिर्फ इतना है—क्या सच दिखाना इतना मुश्किल हो गया है?

हम बैंककर्मी वर्षों से हर सरकारी योजना, हर आर्थिक अभियान और देश की अर्थव्यवस्था को मजबूत करने में दिन-रात योगदान देते आए हैं। हमारी जायज़ मांगों को उठाना देशविरोध नहीं, बल्कि अपने अधिकारों के लिए लोकतांत्रिक संघर्ष है।

और उन सभी मीडिया संस्थानों को लानत जो सच दिखाने का साहस खो चुके हैं और एकतरफा नैरेटिव बनाने में लगे हैं।

Our struggle is fundamentally about protecting the dignity, rights and future of the entire banking fraternity.

The issues before us are not merely demands; they concern the very foundation of a fair and respectful workplace — Five-Day Banking inked on 08.03.2024 between @ChiefIba and @UFBUIndia , Fair and equitable PLI, preservation of bilateralism, and the honouring of negotiated settlements and commitments.

Collective bargaining has meaning only when agreements reached through bilateral dialogue are respected and implemented in their true spirit.

A sea of thousands of bank officers and employees converged at historic Aazad Maidan, Mumbai, transforming the strike into a powerful expression of unity, determination and collective resolve.

I had the privilege of leading this massive gathering of agitated bank officers and addressing the inspired bankers. The energy, enthusiasm and determination displayed by each one of them made one thing absolutely clear — the banking fraternity stands united and will not retreat!

I was joined by Dilip Saha ji, Executive Vice Chairman, @aiboc_in , Anton Saldanha ji, President, @BOIOAMNG , along with several senior AIBOC leaders and other comrades who stood shoulder to shoulder with the striking bankers.

Our struggle is centred around issues that directly affect the dignity, rights and future of the banking fraternity which includes implementation of Five-Day Banking, Fair and equitable PLI, Respect for bilateralism etc. *As such collective bargaining viz a viz negotiated settlements must be honoured and industrial relations must be built on dialogue, not unilateral decisions.* Needless to state, our legitimate service and workplace concerns deserve timely and meaningful resolution.

The magnificent response of more than 2500 bank employees at Azad Maidan has once again demonstrated the strength of collective action and trade union unity.

We are united. We are determined. We shall continue the struggle until justice is achieved.
