⚠️ DANGEROUS BOW ECHO CONTINUES ACROSS ILLINOIS ⚠️

A well-organized bow echo/MCS continues racing east across northern and central Illinois toward western Indiana at roughly 45 MPH. ⛈️💨

🌬️ Damaging winds remain the primary threat, with gusts up to 75 MPH possible. Strong 35–50 kt winds behind the line are helping maintain a robust rear-inflow jet, which should keep the damaging-wind threat going.

↘️ The complex may begin turning more southeastward over the next 1–2 hours as it interacts with an outflow boundary across eastern Illinois. A strongly unstable environment remains available to fuel the storms.

⚠️ The severe threat is expected to reach western Indiana, and an additional Severe Thunderstorm Watch will likely be needed east of the current watch area.

I just had a brief tornado pass over my location and continue east near I-80 by La Grange. Significant damage is already visible throughout the area.

Northern Illinois has already experienced more storms in 2026 than in all of 2025, with five months still left in the year. Storms are becoming more frequent, more powerful and more destructive.

Monday's storm brought 80+ mph winds, heavy rain and hail, causing widespread damage across the region. More than 530,000 were impacted and approximately 290,000 have already been restored. Communities including Maywood, Bolingbrook, Chicago Heights, Skokie, Waukegan and Libertyville were among the hardest hit.

That's why restoration after severe storms can take time. Crews must assess damage, remove hazards and make repairs before power can be safely restored. In some locations, roads must be cleared of downed trees before crews can access damaged equipment.

More than 2,300 personnel are being deployed today to restore power as safely and quickly as possible across every impacted community. Based on the history of similar storms of this size, we expect 80% of interruptions to be restored by Wednesday at noon, and the vast majority of impacted customers restored by 10pm on Friday, July 31st.
