No mother should die bringing forth life. Preventable maternal deaths are a violation of women’s rights. In Kenya, deaths from postpartum haemorrhage persist not for lack of solutions, but due to systemic gaps including delayed detection, weak referral chains, stock-outs, and inequitable access to skilled care. This is a failure of accountability and health system delivery, not inevitability.

That warning rings hollow. The era of mass, disciplined mobilisation did not outlive Raila Odinga. He built grassroots structures and sustained pressure over time. What we see now from Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua is rhetoric without machinery. Announcing a “mother of all demos” is easy; delivering it requires organisation they have yet to demonstrate.
