Writing historical fiction about Vera, England hockey player. In the heavy snow of 1920s they often cleared hockey pitch to enable matches to pick English team. This was Vera, 1910.
Her story & her siblings in my podcast #100YearsofCox https://t.co/RWCdiQ023s

Write more letters, especially handwritten ones! Reading old family handwritten letters, decades after they were written, is completely fascinating. Emails will never survive in the same way. Go Dinah!

What a whirlwind of a day! Delighted we featured in The Times, followed by an invitation to go on Times Radio, and another interview and photoshoot scheduled for tomorrow! Apparently a mention in The Telegraph and officially 1500 members! Good job, everyone! 😁📰📻✉️🌪🎉

Easter holidays, April 1914 was gloriously hot, described in my letters. My family were at Eggworthy House, Horrabridge #Devon visiting Vixen Tor, Staple Tor & the Misses & eating egg sandwiches. Enid fell in the river, skirts & all #Dartmoor #WhatBernardWrote #100YearsofCox
In Jan 1919, Christopher Machell Cox (who later became Sir) was finally demobbed and started at Balliol. "Lucky person" wrote Vera. He passed his army exams the day WW1 ended, fortunately never went to the trenches #100YearsofCox #MachellCoxLetters
Unopened letters, how interesting! Some of my family's budget letters got lost in the post, between UK & Africa in early 1900s. One letter had firsthand descriptions of 1909 Blackpool Air Show, one of the first ever aeroplane shows, sadly lost #WhatNevilleWrote #100YearsofCox
In 1807, the ship Anne Marie was captured by the British Navy while sailing from the Faroe Islands to Denmark. Five packages and two hundred letters were confiscated from the ship and survived, still sealed, in the Prize Papers. What’s inside? Read below to find out. /1

Don't have an HRH letter with wax seal, but we do have crossed letters, 1820s, written by Matilda Machell with seal and there is a 1790s one with seal - son at Uni, apologising to Mother for his huge debts! #MachellCoxLetters #100YearsofCox
Here’s a very special item, maybe the only of its kind in private hands. A letter dated 29 Aug 1957 from #Broadlands to #BuckinghamPalace marked ‚By Bag to Balmoral please', initialed ‚MofB‘ for ‚Mountbatten of Burma‘ on the lower left and addressed to ‚H.R.H. The Duke of..1/11

1922 & my family are staying in #Terrington Hall, near York @TerringtonHall Billiard table has 1 foot in the grave but architecture of house is truly extraordinary. No gas or electric light but there is a petrol lamp! Garden quite wild but lovely #WhatArthurWrote #100YearsofCox
Snap-dragon, a Victorian Christmas game, as described in 1922 letter. Did you play snap-dragon asked another of the family. I loved playing it when we were children (1870s) espec.when salt was added to the flames #WhatEdmundWrote #100YearsofCox

Have found a delicious anecdote about Admiral Reggie Hall & #WinstonChurchill April 1914, his wife Ethel told the story to her cousin Enid who told siblings in a letter.
Reggie disliked Churchill immensely. One day C came on board the Queen Mary unexpectedly...1/

22 Oct 1943, Sir William ‘Blinker’ Hall, British Admiral & Director of Naval Intelligence in #WW1, died. Set up Room 40 which, in Feb 1917, decoded Zimmermann telegram, proposing military alliance between Germany & Mexico against United States. Major cause of USA entry into war.

In Feb 1909, long before coastal trail was established, Bernard & Arthur walked past St Enodoc, took 2 days to walk from Rock to Crackington Haven. They loved the glorious coastal views but said it was very chilly

Blessed be the springy turf, we pray, pray to thee,
Give to our children all the happy days you gave

Fascinating letters, written over many decades, by my family, in my podcast #100YearsofCox

It's no wonder people get stuck researching family history.
Reading lovely letter by Enid, about her cousins the Henry Leekes and meeting up with 'Tottie' (real name Urania).
How did Urania become Tottie?!

Reading #WW1 #letters. Bernard was a gunner, in Palmers Green, working on 3 inch gun, defending London from Zeps, 1918.
'Red London' was the codeword given over the 'phone. Hostile aircraft on the way!
'Green London' meant get ready for action

Anyone else with an entertaining #telegram story or letters sent and misunderstood?
Sent from Africa:
'Cox made Canon. Publish'
Instead telegram arrived in London as:
'Cox mad, cannot publish'

My family went by train from Plymouth to St Ives, 1920s, (pet raven in a basket traveled above on luggage rack)
Their letters describe trains and holidays. Their stories are in my podcast #100YearsofCox

This morning I pootled along the St Ives branchline, hugging bay by clifftop. The Caribbean blue of sea I’ve not enhanced; nor the golden sand. It is a line I’ve been on often, but the noses pressed to glass and exclamations of delight never fail to bring me joy. #travelbytrain.

Wonderful tearooms of old London. My gg g'f Dr Cox wrote a brilliant letter in 1909 about several decades of teas, coffees and lunches. His fascinating letter is read by me, Frances, in my podcast #100YearsofCox

But there was no official distance, and the length of the race varied from course to course.
Until 1908, during the London Olympics, when the organisers settled on a distance of 26 miles.
Before adding 385 yards to make sure competitors finished in front of the Royal Box.

Cat on the luggage rack 😄 - in my family letters, 1920s, Arthur & family took a pet raven, secured in a basket, on the luggage rack, Plymouth to St Ives by train. Pet raven protested loudly, Arthur's young son used consoling words #100YearsofCox #machellcoxletters
🐈 There is a cat on the luggage rack. I repeat: cat on the luggage rack!
Hoping for a purr-fect journey on the @LNER down to King’s Cross.
(Don’t worry, owner is underneath!)
