Really enjoyed hearing @ProfJohnGardner speak at @uofg1820 #1820ScotRads event on plays & poems written at the time on #1820Radical Uprising and Cato St (so called) conspiracy. Loved his observations on the works written in 1970s being influenced by contemporary contexts.

Stepping into that long tradition of ‘protest’ and ‘political’ song, a rousing set from singer songwriter Sophie Rogers, performing pieces from #1820radical period. So important that contemporary performers in Scotland are able to access & research the songbooks of #1820ScotRads

Opening the afternoon session are some beautiful renditions of songs written in response to Scottish Radicalism, sung by the immensely talented Sophie Rogers on #1820ScotRads
Huge credit to all the organisers who had to shift this event from the original dates marking the bicentennial last year of #1820radical. This has been so worth the wait. Excellent content.
Breaking for lunch now but still plenty more to come as we explore memorialisation of 1820 with song, poetry, drama and memoir. #1820ScotRads
Session 2 @UofG1820 #1820ScotRads event: Powerful to hear local case studies shining a light on distinct local responses together with shared common concerns, including ‘The Battle of the Belllows’, Duntocher and the County of Dumbarton during the #1820radical Uprising.

Great to hear from @PaisleyMuseum curator @_Eairdsidh at #1820ScotRads event, highlighting some of the gems in Paisley’s collection associated with #1820Radical Uprising, including this from Major Cartwright, advocate for universal male suffrage.

Fascinating presentation from @RhonaLBrown1 taking us through different and at times conflicting accounts of #1820radical in her survey of newspapers across Scotland and England at the time #1820ScotRads

Illuminating presentation by Emma Macleod at #1820ScotRads online symposium, outlining the significance of 1790s context as establishing the mind of the government in 1820 #1820radical

Contributions a today’s @UofG1820 online symposium come from a range of disciplines bringing perspectives by historians, museums professionals and arts. The programme explores political responses, people’s responses & memorialisation of the Scottish Radical Uprising #1820radical

Like Andrew Hardie, who was convicted early yesterday, John Baird now faces a mandatory death sentence when the trial ends. He's a weaver from Condorrat in Dunbartonshire [modern-day Cumbernauld]. Both men took part in a clash with government forces at Bonnybridge near Falkirk.
We'll be back next week with more from the treason trials following the uprising in Scotland. Best sources include 'One week in April' by @CraigMaggie https://t.co/DExcVutuR7 & 'The Radical Rising' by Ellis & A'Ghobhainn @1820Radical https://t.co/xEDAABCDYm #1820radical
Posters urging a general strike and advocating the use of arms to secure the rights of the people appeared across central Scotland on the morning of 2 April. They were from a committee claiming to be organising a provisional government. #1820radical

This September marks the centenary of the Glasgow Independent Labour Party honouring the martyrdom of those killed in the 1820 radical rising at the Sighthill monument.
As the successor of the ILP, @MSLabour wants to play our part in commemorating this significant chapter 1/2
