So the NPCC have spent £8,000,000 on #DJI #AeroScope counter drone (C-UAS) installs alone this year, it looks like far more spending is going on C-UAS than crypto-fraud by NPCC on the face of it. It makes you wonder what the annual running cost of all this kit is.
Consider another £6,000,000 has been spent on associated kit in 2023.
It begs the question what the genuine need is for such expensive C-UAS coverage for such a trivial criminal justice issue versus all the kinds of crimes society encounters day to day.
Some in the industry are arguing that NPCC is trying to find any drone crime no matter how trivial to total up, to keep justifying its own existence. Basically, they're trying to make a self-fulfilling prophecy, they are trying to make more drone crimes, totalling up trivial and non-crimes, while finding ways to total up even more.
As an analogy, imagine if you totalled up how many times an Audi or BMW driver turned without indicating and could record every national occurrence as a crime, that's what is going on with drones. While this analogy is facetious there's a fair debate to be had.
My personal view is @NPAShq should take on the role for national drone matters, they have the experience in airspace matters and are best placed to plan the overall airspace response. They'd know how much to focus on planes, helicopters, drones and counter drone and to ensure a level headed balance with investment that serves all the forces across the UK.
We could be saving more lives with helicopters or drones with £8,000,000 instead of trying to use some technicality to nab some bloke taking a photo of a sunset with a toy plastic drone.
Maybe @TracyBrabin, @alison_4life could lobby on behalf of @WestYorksPolice.

Well done to Kevin (@d0tslash), he's been the first on X to spot a very significant development with #DJI #AeroScope.
Maybe it's due to Kevin & others spotting that AeroScope was never properly encrypted, or maybe it's to stick the middle finger up at other C-UAS vendors offering DJI detection having reversed engineered interpreting the transmission, maybe Ukraine has played a part, but the sh#t will be hitting the fan.
The rumours are that DJI are going to encrypt AeroScope transmissions meaning any existing AeroScope that isn't upgraded and every C-UAS that's not integrating a real AeroScope will no longer be able to detect DJI drones.
This means globally there will be some* airports and other infrastructure that have bought cheap systems and police teams that become blind to new DJI drones unless they buy upgrades or integrate a legit AeroScope into their system.
This means the secret (to us plebs at least) national UK drone detection array will need an upgrade if it's not had one already... A note to any tech journos reading, you need to be keeping a close watch on the CAA, oh and erm ahem, the Home Office...
The key question is can DJI (and will they if they can), encrypt AeroScope transmissions on existing models when firmware is released?
*Airports that have a military grade setup will be mitigated regardless as they don't need to detect AeroScope transmissions...
Someone tipped me off that @djiglobal @djienterprise @DJISupport @djiflysafe team has updated the AeroScope product line (remember they killed it off?). Now there is an "Upgrade Module and ensure that
AeroScope is compatible with future DJI aircraft products." cc @emroth08

The Daily Mail is trying to pass off Gatwick 2018 photos of #DJI #AeroScope as actual photos from Sunday.
The fact there's video & pilots reporting the balloons & they tie in with the timeline & wind direction seems to matter not.
In 2018, the Daily Mail mistakenly reported that the Rafael Drone Dome was at #Gatwick when in fact it was @Leonardo_live Falcon Shield, the Metis Skyperion component of which is still at Gatwick.
