So, is this a Falcon (صَقْر) and the mounted rider one of the (الصقارة) al-ṣiqāra
OR is this a GosHawk (باز) and the mounted rider of the al-bayzāra / al-bazdara (البيازة or البزدرة)
I'm thinking about this question because when I visited #Granada #Spain #AlAndalus this question came to mind & I will explain later! Is Falconing or Goshawking? But, let talk about: The صقر (ṣaqr, falcon) and باز (bāz, goshawk/hawk) are distinctly different birds, with different biology, hunting styles, habitats, and roles in traditional falconry.Biological and Practical Differences
صقر (Falcon): True falcons (family Falconidae), such as the peregrine (شاهين) or saker. They have long, pointed wings and are built for high-speed stoop dives from above in open country. They excel in desert or flat terrain, pursuing birds like bustards or pigeons in flight.
باز (Goshawk/Hawk): Accipiters (family Accipitridae), especially the Northern Goshawk or similar. They have shorter, broader wings and longer tails for rapid maneuvering in wooded or vegetated areas. They are ambush hunters that dart through trees or undergrowth after rabbits, birds, or small game.
These differences affect training, flying style, and preferred environments. In Arabic falconry terminology:
الصقارة (al-ṣiqāra) specifically refers to falconry with falcons.
البيازة or البزدرة (al-bayzāra / al-bazdara) refers to hawking with goshawks/hawks.
The practitioner terms reflect this: صقار for falconer (with ṣaqr) vs. بازدار or بيزار for hawker (with bāz).Could the Fatimid Bowl Depict a باز Instead of a صقر?Unlikely, though the art is stylized and exact species identification is impossible. The artifact (Fatimid lusterware bowl, Egypt, 10th–11th century, e.g., Abegg-Stiftung collection) shows a mounted rider with a bird of prey on the fist or arm — the classic falconry pose. It is consistently described in museum and art-historical sources as a falconer scene reflecting courtly life.Key points:
The dynamic mounted figure suggests open-terrain hunting, which aligns far better with falcons (صقور) than goshawks (باز), which prefer wooded cover.
Medieval Islamic lusterware is artistic and simplified (free brushstrokes, not photorealistic). The bird is a generic raptor symbol of prestige and hunting prowess.
Sources label it explicitly as falconry/falconer, consistent with the dominant Arab tradition of صقور.
It is almost certainly intended to represent a صقر (falcon) in the cultural sense, not a goshawk.Did Arabs and Fatimids Train and Acquire باز (Goshawks) Too?Yes, they did — though falcons (صقور) were the iconic and preferred birds in traditional Arab practice.
Arab tradition: Deeply rooted in pre-Islamic and Bedouin culture, especially in the Arabian Peninsula and desert regions. Falcons were prized for hunting in open landscapes (e.g., houbara bustard). This remains the core of Gulf falconry heritage today.
Broader Islamic/medieval practice: Both types were used. Medieval Arabic treatises on falconry (kutub al-bayzara) discuss the training, medicine, and care of multiple raptors, including falcons and hawks/goshawks. The vocabulary (بيازة) confirms goshawks were actively trained.
Fatimids (Egypt, 10th–11th centuries): Their courtly culture included elaborate hunting. Egypt offered varied terrain (deserts + Nile areas with vegetation), so both falcons and goshawks would have been practical. The existence of this bowl and similar figural art shows falconry (broadly) as a high-status activity. They also used other trained animals like cheetahs for hunting.
In summary: صقر and باز are different birds with specialized roles. The Fatimid bowl depicts the prestigious mounted falconry tradition centered on صقر (falcons). However, Arabs and Fatimids (like other medieval Islamic elites) trained and valued both, as part of a sophisticated raptor-keeping culture documented in texts and art. The bowl remains a beautiful example of Fatimid lusterware celebrating this elite pastime.
