Bacon examines eyesight and the anatomy of the eye in Part V of his ‘Opus Majus’ (1267), as well as light, reflected vision, refraction, mirrors, and lenses.
He makes reference to the works of #Ptolemy, #Grosseteste and #Alhazen.

ROGER BACON (1214-1294)
This proponent of medieval science writes in his treatise 'De Multiplicatione Specierum' (Book II, ch. viii) and 'Perspectiva,' the principle of the Camera Obscura. #RogerBacon

Sometimes during 1011-1027, Ibn al-Haytham published his most famous book Kitab al-Manazir or the Book of Optics. This book drastically transformed the understanding of light and vision.

Today, my Ph.D. student Alexander Kampmann successfully defended his thesis on #Alhazen, a tool that automatically determines failure circumstances: “The program crashes when an input line has more than 1024 characters”. Congratulations, Dr. Kampmann!

İşin ilginç tarafı, Müslümanların tarihte ne kadar büyük yerleri olduğuna önce Müslümanları inandıracaksın..
Bu da işimizin ne kadar zor olduğunu gösteriyor.
- Prof. Dr. #FuatSezgin - #cezeri #alhazen
In ‘Book of Optics’ Ibn al-Haytham explained that rays of light travel in straight lines and are distinguished by the body that reflected the rays. He studied and wrote on the dark chamber, pinhole images, optical phenomena, perspective, rainbow, mirrors, & refraction.

De Chales also attempted ‘three-dimensional projection’ and improved on the ‘intersector’ of #Alberti, by adding a mirror. De Chales spoke of #Witelo and #Alhazen. Below Walgensten's ‘Magic Lantern’ as illustrated in Dechales ‘Cursus seu mundus mathematicus’ (1674).

CLAUDE FRANCOIS MILLIET DE CHALES (1621-1678)
On page 666 of his second edition of 'Cursus S. Mundus', (published posthumously) #DeChales details his meeting with #Walgensten back in 1665. In the section on optics, De Chales tells us he knew the retinal image is reversed.
Particular attention is drawn to the image of the #eclipse and the "sickle-like shapes" in his 'On the Form of The Eclipse' which includes many descriptions and drawings. As #Aristotle did, #Alhazen refers to the clarity of the image when the #aperture is smaller.

ALHAZEN (IBN AL-HAYTHAM) (965-1038)
Also known as IBN AL HAITHAM, this Arabian scholar writes on the observances of the #CameraObscura effect.
It's been suggested that 'Photismi De Lumine Et Umbra' might be the most remarkable optical treatise of the sixteenth century outside the tradition of #Alhazen, or even the best #optical book of the Renaissance. #Maurolycus line engraving by M. Bovis after Polidoro da Caravaggio.
In his 1st ed. of 'Photismi De Lumine Et Umbra', Maurolycus discusses;
-rainbows;
-vision; lenses; the principal of ‘dioptrics’ (refraction of light);
-catoptrics (mirrors reflecting light);
-photometry (measuring light intensity);
-caustics (reflected or refracted light rays)

This proponent of medieval science writes in his treatise 'De Multiplicatione Specierum' (Book II, ch.viii) and 'Perspectiva', the principle of the ‘Camera Obscura’.
This study is joint work with Alexander Kampmann, the principal researcher behind #Alhazen. Alex has almost completed his PhD thesis, and all that is missing is the results from this study. Please share and retweet!

Below, the front page of ‘Opticae Thesaurus’, the 1st Latin translation (from Arabic by Frederick Risner) of #Alhazen's ‘Book of #Optics’. The illustration integrates many examples of #optical phenomena including perspective, the rainbow, mirrors, & #refraction. Colourized also.
Among those he inspired were #Witelo, John Peckham, Roger Bacon, Leonardo Da Vinci, René #Descartes and Johannes #Kepler, of whom we have written on herein. Below, the structure of the human eye according to #Alhazen.
