▫ In #AncientEgyptian belief, #Ammit (also spelled Ammut or Amamet) was the personification of punishment, a final threat to those who fail to live a just life. With a body part lion, part hippopotamus, and part crocodile; the three largest and most dangerous animals known to the Egyptians, her name translates to “Devourer”, she is also referred to as the “Eater of the Dead”.
Ammit appears most clearly in Chapter 125 of the #BookoftheDead, which is known as the Weighing of the Heart ceremony, the central moment in the journey of the deceased, where their soul is finally judged and justice -be it good or bad-, is delivered. Ammit’s placement next to #Thoth in the judgment scene reflects her role as the enforcer of divine justice. Ammit is often seen sitting and waiting to consume the heart of the dead, sometimes with her crocodile jaws agape, ready to devour, but most of the time, stoic and patiently waiting, with Thoth standing beside her, recording the outcome of the judgment with impartial accuracy.
The earliest known depictions of Ammit date to the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055–1650 B.C.), though she became more prominently featured during the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1070 B.C.), particularly in the Book of the Dead.
Ammit was not a goddess, she had no temples or cult devoted to her, nor was she worshipped. Instead, she perhaps could be considered a demonic or spiritual entity, a personification of divine retribution who existed solely to punish the unworthy dead by devouring their hearts. The British Museum cites her as, “a powerful and terrifying creature who had supernatural powers”.
Ammit’s terrifying role underscored the Egyptians’ deep concern with moral purity and justice in life, as failing Ma’at’s standard in death meant obliteration by Ammit, a fate worse than death, as it meant eternal non-being.
