What degree of #dietary #flexibility do #omnivorous members of the clade #Carnivora actually exhibit? Wolves, for instance, are omnivorous, yet animal matter clearly dominates their diet. The #brownbear, however, is known for greater flexibility. While #Ursus #arctos is known to consume carrion, hunt down large but vulnerable animals, and catch salmon during their spawning migrations, its diet consists predominantly of #plantbased #foods such as grasses, herbs, nuts, roots, and berries. Fungi are also readily consumed.
When #hunting, particularly larger prey, the bear employs no specific tactical strategy; its primary advantages are #size and #strength, allowing a single swipe of its paw to crush a prey animal's skull.
Yet, with such a flexible animal, the question arises as to the extent, given the right #environmental #conditions, to which it can become highly specialized in consuming either animal or plant matter.
Shaymae Iken et al. (2026) demonstrated that an extinct #Holocene #subspecies of the brown bear native to northern #Morocco, the #Atlasbrownbear, showed such a strong #preference for a plant-based diet that #isotopedata derived from preserved collagen fell below the values of #ungulates living at the same time. The samples were analyzed using stable isotope analysis (δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N), radiocarbon dating, and peptide mass fingerprinting (PMF). The remains studied originated from animals that lived during a comparatively narrow time window in the early Holocene.
