African Cinemas: Continuum, Change, and the Politics of Labeling... Mulling over this excerpt from a Metrograph interview with Mati Diop regarding her 2019 debut #ATLANTICS, and its place in the realm of African cinemas. Specifically, what an "African film" is or should be, and the politics of labeling. It raises questions about several key issues and invites deeper engagement, especially when juxtaposed against her uncle, the late great pioneer Djibril Diop Mambéty's 30-year-old statement, "It is good for the future of cinema that Africa exists," and his call for African filmmakers to "invent" their own culturally distinct film languages. To be clear, I'm not pitting them against each other, but rather understanding and appreciating the continuum and evolution of African cinemas through their individual contributions, especially as relatives. Also, in the excerpt, she mentions being inspired by him. But it's important to note that Diop's mixed African and European heritage and international background might influence her viewpoint. Her reluctance to categorize ATLANTICS strictly as African cinema could reflect her own personal identity, therefore resisting a singular label. Also, the generational difference between them is necessary for understanding their perspectives and motivations. Mambéty's experiences under colonial rule and in the subsequent post-colonial landscape deeply influenced him and his work. Ultimately, Diop's perspective is critical as it opens up space for filmmakers to present stories that are not strictly bound by heritage but are instead enriched by them.
