Folks #ATSISPEP pretty directs government to where to spend the money in Indigenous suicide prevents with none of the programs it lists as “promising” show that they actually reduce rates of suicide. The is also zero recommendations on the need to for Indigenous clinical skills.

What was also a bit of a jaw dropper is that using the same measures, authors of #ATSISPEP evaluated their own programs, giving themselves full marks, despite, you guessed it, *no evidence those programs had reduced Indigenous suicide*.

The kicker is tho, is that the AMHFA training was approved ti be rolled out in more than 60 remote locations across Australia back in 2016 under Scullion. This is because #ATSISPEP recommends the program (without any evidence it reduces suicide). https://t.co/uHrti3vb0y

What is worrying, is that if it’s the AMHFA is what it referred to here “Remote jobless to be trained as Indigenous ‘crisis’ contacts” (under the guise of suicide prevention) it is w/out any evidence that it prevents suicide. Why? #ATSISPEP recommends it. https://t.co/H25GlCEu6J

Two other gatekeeper programs are listed in #ATSISPEP (UWA 2016), and they are Suicide Story (which incorporates ASIST) and Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid (AMHFA) (p. 83). https://t.co/qnY6Ym3HMp

Another of concern I hv with #ATSISPEP is the identification of what are “success factors” (UWA 2016, p3). Gatekeeper training - which is listed - for example, has never been identified, least of all in an Indigenous context, to be an effective strategy to reduce suicide. Never.

If so, this goes against a critical factor underpinning the #ATSISPEP, and the goal of the ABTSI SP Strategy which clearly articulates in its foreword – see below incl highlighted “genuinely engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people”. Folks, it’s been a jaw drop.

Going back to the interventions in #ATSISPEP , the creation of these interventions (community-led Indigenous suicide prevention programs) and their description as “promising programs” in (2016, p. 85), does not actually align with the processes outlined in #ATSISPEP (pp. 27 -35).

Another shortcoming of the #ATSISPEP meta-evaluation analysis is the absence of any references to the evaluations the meta-evaluation evaluates (Methodology of the meta-evaluation see pic). *Note the reference to strategy, the one with no clinical utility or measurability.

Something that was also concerning, given the weighting #ATSISPEP has been afforded, is that #ATSISPEP isn’t an evaluation of programs it’s an evaluation of evaluations. IMHO, ATSISPEP falls considerably short as having much utility in the prevention of actual Indigenous suicide.

As part of my studies I reviewed the evaluation framework employed by #ATSISPEP. A few things raised considerable concerns. The first is that of the 19 promising programs – marked against success factors – only 8 of these programs actual directly relate to suicide prevention.
