The #AxEMU represents a major evolution in NASA’s approach to spacesuit development. While NASA has long partnered with industry for suit design and manufacturing, the xEVAS program marks the first time NASA is procuring lunar EVA services from a commercial provider under a service-based model. Leveraging lessons learned from legacy spacesuits, Axiom Space will incorporate new technology to deliver a suit with enhanced safety and reliability.

Current spacesuits on the International Space Station require significant maintenance time. Many parts are not easily accessible, which makes servicing them riskier. The new #AxEMU suits feature a rear hatch entry design, cutting down the risk of damage or losing tiny screws and washers during maintenance. It will also make servicing them much faster and simpler, further reducing potential errors.

Axiom Space has teamed up again with @Prada to introduce the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), the innermost layer within the #AxEMU spacesuit that is designed to protect astronauts from the elements when they explore the lunar surface for the first time in more than 50 years.
The LCVG collaboration draws on Prada's expertise in engineered knitting and innovative design concepts, resulting in a next-generation garment that maintains cooling and ventilation while enhancing comfort during up to eight-hour spacewalks.

The single foundation architecture is an important part of the #AxEMU. Having a core suit design that serves as a single base for multiple mission types means it can adapt quickly and cost-effectively with minimal changes. In most cases, the difference is as simple as swapping footwear: rugged lunar walking boots engineered for gravity, extreme temperatures, and abrasive dust versus lighter LEO boots optimized for microgravity translation and station interfaces.

I recently went back to Houston for some additional #AxEMU testing. It was great to be back in the suits lab testing some of the tools we are building for use on the lunar surface.

The #AxEMU is designed with commonality and consistency to ensure critical interfaces are familiar regardless of the vehicle or habitat. This may sound like a small design detail, but the ability to operate confidently in any scenario is extremely important. The design target for the rear-hatch entry on the #AxEMU suit enables a more simplified donning experience. Astronauts performing lunar spacewalks will have to contend not only with limited space but also limited EVA timeframes. The rear-entry suit approach helps eliminate the complex, multi-piece assembly of legacy suits and minimize the need for crew assistance in the tight confines of a lunar vehicle or habitat.
