It has to be different because in Tezos bakers decide the future of the chain. If bakers can't even be bothered to pay, that's a pretty good reason for their delegators to leave and to seek better bakers. This gives poor bakers less power to make changes and a bad reputation to boot. We're also seeking to make staking even more different with Adaptive Inflation in the near future. Adaptive Inflation will primarily reward bakers and co-bakers who put their tez at stake to protect the chain at a higher level using a reward curve based on how much is at stake at any given time. Bakers are the people providing both geat and tez stake. Cobakers provide only tez stake (they pool with their baker while retaining ownership) but they're also responsible for any slashing penalties (e.g.: for malicious behavior) of their chosen baker. Imagine, the relationship between cobaker and baker has to be even more active than currently bakers and delegators. Any way you slice it, in Tezos we must encourage bakers to communicate with their stakers and their cobakers in the future. The plus side for you when it comes to Adaptive Inflation is that you won't have to worry about staking at all. The yearly inflation will go down to 1/3 of its current value and delegators won't have to worry about delegating, their existing tez will simply become more due to less making its way into the system.
