*This will be a longer thread on #Adventist education and some its problems, but I will begin discussing possible solutions as well. (I'd love to get #AdventistTwitter activated in discussion on this one)
The Adventist education system needs a complete revamp. In many ways the structure of our system is undermining our mission in severe, but completely unintentional ways. Let me explain....
So for many Adventist youth they spend grades K-10 or K-8 in a small local church school tied directly to a local church and community. (This step is great, no real complaints with this)
But then generally the options are either you transfer to your local public school or the incentives push you to go away to an Adventist boarding academy for 2-4 years, uprooted from your family, local church, and local community. Besides the uprooting factor you are being put into a church scenario where you are around over a hundred of your peers (A situation unrealistic in basically all local churches).
From the academy, the Adventist education incentives push toward another relocation, and further alienation from the original local community, to one of our handful of Adventist colleges or universities around the U.S. This relocation generally comes with a lot of debt as well notably. Again you are in an environment, now with a couple of thousand of your peers.
By the time Adventist students are done with 4 years of undergrad and 2-6 years of graduate school they have now been dislocated from local church communities for roughly 10+ years, many never return to their original churches and quite a few never find their way to any local church, or they continue the trend Adventist education taught them of church hopping.
Possible Solutions:
Here I think the internet, for all its downsides, can actually point to a different way forward. What if we began to scale up the K-8/10 school model? Make it possible for kids to remain in their local Adventist church schools, like their public school peers remaining rooted in their hometowns. Use online education where needed to augment smaller staffs. Also what if our conferences made a decisive effort to get students in high school connected with trade programs in their local communities, so that for kids who wanted careers were waiting on the other side of high school.
On the college level it's absolutely insane that at the same time the internet has made the cost of information virtually non existent the price of getting an education has gone exponentially through the roof. Here I find the model of the @jordanbpeterson's new Peterson Academy to be very intriguing. Make high quality instruction available online, and use a combination of social media and local Adventist churches to make the experience a social one more like the brick and mortar college/university experience.
