I will be away from Twittuh today for a day @ThomasMoreNH.
I will be teaching #Aldhelm's riddles and two of my sonnets after lunch, then doing a public event on Petrarch with Andrew Frisardi after dinner.
I am prepping for some academic chats in the coming months, and I rediscovered this talk on #Aldhelm I gave a decade ago at the @firstthingsmag offices:

A fine choice for @JonathanCape.
I spent some time with #DeclanRyan when I was @clamskcl to talk about #Aldhelm.
.@JonathanCape has appointed Declan Ryan as its new poetry editor, to take up the role in summer 2026 following the retirement of Robin Robertson 👇 https://t.co/msWej0iBNm

From just a little earlier and not far away, #Aldhelm's library purportedly included the last known copy of #Lucan's #Orpheus.
Have you ever wanted to become just as well-educated as a monk or nun in 8th century Northumbria?
Using some evidence from the works of Alcuin of York, I put together a comprehensive reading list for what you would have learned.

Eighth-century #Ireland was largely cut off from the continent, and had a lot of secondary materials in Latin, but had few of the actual texts that were being critiqued.
Britain had lost even more knowledge of Latin; #Aldhelm's parents imported a tutor from Ireland to teach him the language.
Accordingly, the Irish developed a quirky literature of their own that fascinated #JamesJoyce--literature almost completely ignored by classics departments eager to slam their doors shut after 100 AD.
"It didn’t occur to people to mark word boundaries through a mark or space. Such radical punctuation developments would take another thousand years, and happen on a far-flung island at the edge of Europe – 8th-century Ireland. But that’s another story..." https://t.co/FrfiUsNiRY

Legend has it that #Aldhelm wrote Old English as well as Latin verse.
No such verse has survived, but Aldhelm often used #alliteration in #riddles in novel ways that suggest he had a taste for Old English verse.
Thank you for this @poemtoday!
The first abbot of Malmesbury was st Aldhelm d.709 - a member of the royal family of Wessex, & a poet. He used to sit on the town bridge singing ancient Saxon songs to attract onlookers. Then he would change the songs from pagan to Christian.

"Why the Venerable #Bede should be England’s patron saint" by @BijanOmrani:

Arguably, apart from hymns, end-#rhyme in Latin #poetry started with #Aldhelm.

The multilingual Middle Ages! One of my favourite examples of early medieval multilingualism is this 10th-c. poem about the Anglo-Saxon poet Aldhelm, written in alliterative macaronic verse, with Old English and Latin half lines, as well as some Latinised Greek!

As well as #Bede’s day today, on 25 May the Church also celebrates St #Aldhelm, first Bishop of #Sherborne and star pupil of Archbishop #Theodore. @amjuster introduces his excellent translation of Aldhelm’s #riddles. @SherborneAbbey https://t.co/67YGLCcpJr

Memorable beginning to Ian Hislop’s series, ‘Oldest Jokes’, which features #Bede and #Aldhelm, first Bishop of #Sherborne - though introduced here as Aldhelm of Malmesbury, where he was Abbot and wrote the witty letter which begins alliteratively with ‘p’. 1/2
@theULSpecColl team feature in this episode of Ian Hislop's Oldest Jokes on @BBCRadio4! @suz_paul and @Rory_Naismith take Ian on a jaunt through the Moore Bede and the Old English Bede, searching for clues of early English humour. Listen here: https://t.co/iYdOHONVNi
