One of the woodland gates on the estate incorporates part of a victorian pair of police handcuffs! Believed to have been done by an estate blacksmith c1900. I was first shown these by a gamekeeper in the 1980's. Nothing was ever wasted. [email protected] #Althorpestates

Bee orchid (ophrys apifera) Mimicking a bee and even giving off the scent of a female bee to attract passing males to aid pollination. Clever yes, but in this country they self- pollinate so the deception is not actually needed. [email protected] #orchids #althorpestates

The old blocked entrance into Althorp's huge Ice House chamber @AlthorpHouse The obelisk dates to 1798. A much smaller ice room was found near to the Stable block in 1998 when new visitor centre alterations were undertaken. [email protected] #Althorpestates #icehouses
