After seeing the Dickson-made Edison-patented Kinetoscope, Farnum anticipated it’s use as a new method for advertising.
Farnum employed what he dubbed a "transfer roller" to move the images. Pictured is figure 2 from his patent.

WILLIAM CARLETON FARNUM (1840-1913)
Several Kinetoscope patents were filed in the 1890s mostly by Edison.
However, one in particular by William Carleton Farnum (Patent Nº 547775) was granted to Farnum on 15 October 1895.

Marvin's US patent № 584228 granted 8 June 1897 was for a cylindrical Toy Mutoscope where the power to turn the images was provided by the viewer's breath. #HarryMarvin #AMBC #historyofmovies #precinema
Marvin was able to tap into the children’s pre cinema market, but it took 21 months for this motion toy to be approved. Rossell 2022, p184.

TOY MUTOSCOPE
HARRY NORTON MARVIN (1862-1940)
Marvin of #AMBC fame created his #ToyMutoscope that operated by the user simply breathing. This was a very simple take-off of his partner Herman Casler’s #Nickelodeon #Mutoscope (which was cranked) where the viewers breath turned images into motion.

No evidence led to any suspects, and both cases remain unsolved. Adolphe had been a witness in the 1891 case of Edison versus #AMBC and gave witness to his father's work opposing Edison's claim of being the inventor of Cinematography. LOUIS AIME AUGUSTIN LE PRINCE (1841-1890)
Le Prince disappeared without a trace 16 September, 1890 somewhere between #Dijon and Paris. He was never seen again including his papers and luggage. His son Adolphe was found shot dead on #FireIsland, New York in 1901 while duck hunting.
SHOOTING THE CHUTES (1903)
#BillyBitzer on the #AMBC camera at #LunaPark. Released in July. Built in 1895 by #CaptainPaulBoyton as #SeaLionPark later renamed, billing it as “the King of All Amusements.” This copy is from Omar Rasidagic.
The Mutoscope was designed by Casler with Harry Norton Marvin, Elias Bernard Koopman, and W. K. L. Dickson who because he was still with Edison, played a minor and unassuming role with no name recognition. A silent partner, before joining the #AMBC team.
Applied for on 21 November 1894 and granted 5 November 1895, US patent № 549309 was granted to #HermanCasler who used the generic name #Mutoscope.
It was a hand-cranked rotating photographic card device originally intended as a table-top toy. The Mirror which is not shown in the patent illustration was added later to reflect light downward onto the pictures and is seen in the photograph.

Rose Sydell (born as Rosa Sidles 1865-1941) came over from Burlesque and made this one film. #RoseSydell #RosaSidles
From #AMBC (1895-1916), Rose may have had the shortest film career on record—one minute and 5 seconds long.
Released to the Mutoscopes in the #Nickelodeons, on 2 February.

AMERICAN MUTOSCOPE & BIOGRAPH COMPANY
Founded by men like Casler and Dickson among others, the #AMBC was originally founded as American #Mutoscope Company -- #Biograph being added in 1899. They introduced their American Biograph projector.

#HermannCasler later worked at #AMBC & the Mutoscope was the Nº 1 competitor to Edison’s #Kinetoscope.

Photographs were mounted radially on an axle and when rotated or turned, each #photograph was held in sequence just long enough to be seen before being replaced by the next.
The #pictures were held at a rate of between 16-18 #frames per second.
