¡ATENCIÓN! 🚨

In 1894 Herman Casler invented a mechanized Flip Book the #Mutoscope, which mounted the images on a rotating cylinder rather than binding them in a book. A popular attraction through the 1st decade of the 20th century, it appeared in penny arcades and Nickelodeons. #filmhistory #historyoffilm
A flip book typically consists of a small, bound stack of pages, each with a slightly altered image. When flipped rapidly, the images blend into a continuous motion due to the persistence of vision. They’re distinct from other optical devices because they’re portable, require no mechanical parts, and are user-controlled.
Flip Books are usually illustrated books for children, although they can also be for adults and use a series of images other than illustrations such as photographs, or consecutive frames (all 12, 16, 18 or 24) from a scene in a movie. Flip books were a simpler, manual counterpart to these technologies, requiring no equipment beyond the book itself. #cinemahistory
Flip Books are essentially a primitive form of animation like the #BurntCityBowl. Like all of the Victorian optical toys, they rely on persistence of vision to create the illusion of continuous motion. Except that nothing is moving.
Flip Books remained a staple of children’s toys and novelty items through the 20th century. They were used in advertising (e.g., by companies like Coca-Cola), as educational tools, and even in early film studies to demonstrate animation principles.
Applied for on 21 November 1894 and granted 5 November 1895, US patent № 549309 was granted to #HermanCasler who used the generic name #Mutoscope.
It was a hand-cranked rotating photographic card device originally intended as a table-top toy. The Mirror which is not shown in the patent illustration was added later to reflect light downward onto the pictures and is seen in the photograph.

THE ORIGINAL MUTOSCOPE
The first Mutoscope by Hermann Casler wasn’t the heavy metal Nickelodeon peepshow that stood on four legs in the arcades and was as tall as a ten-year-old boy. It was a little more compact than that.

HERMANN CASLER (1867-1939)
Casler's #Mutoscope perhaps typifies the #Peepshow in its purest form. A simple motion picture viewing machine capable of flipping pictures chronologically were passed before the viewing area as a crank is turned.
Photographs were mounted radially on an axle and when rotated or turned, each photograph was held in sequence just long enough to be seen before being replaced by the next.
The pictures were held at a rate of between 16-18 frames per second.
SHERLOCK HOLMES BAFFLED (1900)
First film adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s work by American Mutoscope and Biograph. Made for viewing in the #HermannCasler #Mutoscope in #Nickelodeon parlours, not for the cinema houses. Runs :48 seconds. Crank away!

AMERICAN MUTOSCOPE & BIOGRAPH COMPANY
Founded by men like Casler and Dickson among others, the #AMBC was originally founded as American #Mutoscope Company -- #Biograph being added in 1899. They introduced their American Biograph projector.
Pictured: AMBC’s 35mm #Mutograph camera. Biograph's first cameraman was a guy named William Billy Bitzer.

As a single-viewing device, the #Mutoscope could never compete (as could any Peep Show) with the advent of #projection, to larger audiences.
The photographs were taken with the #Mutograph, one of the earliest motion picture #cameras.
THEY CHANGED THEIR TUNE
The Mutoscope could have been renamed the Smutoscope after some smutty pictures started to make their appearance in the Mutoscope. The 'San Francisco Call' changed their tune and published the following;

@TimesAlgebraIND Everyone loves movies and this is how it evolved. This is what movies used to look like!! The Mutoscope, invented in 1894, is an early cinema device that shows short films from folding cards when a crank is turned. #Mutoscope #Movies

An advantage of the Monostéréoscope over the Brewster Stereoscope is that several people can watch it at once, just as #cinema projection surpassed the single-viewer #Kinetoscope or #Mutoscope.
Below, the Brewster Stereoscope from ‘Boys #Playbook of Science,’ 1866, p323.

The #invention of this #instrument tended to change established #theories about #binocular #vision. Claudet took two images and projects them both on the same point of a screen merging to form only one.
Below, an article in French on the Monostéréoscope in Le Stéréoscope.
