Photo of the day of me from Vaughn Arthur photography.
Amazing the wet plate process. Originated in 1851 and less than 1,000 still doing it.
Did you know the glass plate photos have about 100 MEGAPIXELS?

ALEXANDER HESLER (1823–1895)
Hesler was a #Canadian, born in #Montreal and became a #veteran photographer not long after being trained in #Daguerreotype and #Ambrotypes.
Moving to the larger US market he spent most of his professional years in Illinois.
Having inspired #Longfellow to write '#Hiawatha' with his picture of #Minnehaha [Salted paper print, Smithsonian American Art Museum], in 1855, he went on to greater fame with a series of a clean-shaven #Lincoln portraits.
Alongside the Hesler shot of the falls of Minnehaha, is this Edison footage of the same waterfall from 1897.
Two more new additions to my collection!
Both beautiful Ambrotypes, unframed, same family.

One star of our upcoming art show is this triptych made in collaboration with Dave Shrimpton and Shay Shani. It's a rallying call to stop and reverse the story of cultural loss in England.

You often see old #Daguerreotypes and #Ambrotypes but usually of toothless grannies or bewhiskered old men. Over the last ten years I’ve amassed a dozen young gents, which are more hard to find. All 1850-65 in date. Most I’ve paid £65. Cheapest £10.

James Ambrose #Cutting, the inventor of the 'Ambrotype' develops a #Lithography process whereby #photographic negatives can be used for paper reproduction positives. Examples below of some #Ambrotypes of the time, including one of President Lincoln. -30-

JAMES AMBROSE CUTTING (1814-1867)
Cutting creates the #Ambrotype process. The name is taken from (and a play on) his middle name. Ambrotypes were glass negatives viewed as positives when placed over a dark background. Below the Ambrotype showing negative & positive.
