This year, #AngelsofMumbai debuted at the 7th edition of Storyexpress, a storytelling initiative exclusively for children from underserved communities.
At 2 storytelling sessions named Angels of Mumbai and Stories of Kindness and Courage, our illustrated children’s book series based on Mumbai’s real-life heroes were read aloud by author Pooja Patel, followed by animal-themed craft sessions and the distribution of these books to the young audience, which was appreciated by curious children aged eight to 10.
Conducted at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum Plaza and the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan and Zoo (Byculla) at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, the festival was an initiative of the Akshara Foundation that aims to demonstrate how storytelling can help raise awareness, change attitudes and motivate people to take action.

#AngelsOfMumbai | Flavia Agnes’ (@FlaviaAgnes5) Mission To Help Women Facing Domestic And Sexual Violence Through Majlis (@MajlisLaw)
✦“After I became a lawyer due to my own experience with litigation, I found that most lawyers lacked understanding and sensitivity towards women facing domestic violence, and even judges did not always display that sensitivity. So I felt that I would be able to represent women better. That is what led me to start the organisation 34 years ago. The aim was to provide quality legal support at a very reduced rate, or pro bono if they were poor,” she shares.

#AngelsOfMumbai | 'We Cook About 1,500 Meals A Day At Peak'
✦ Prabhadevi resident Anuja Kohli Mariwala director of Pepper Cook Seva Foundation has always believed in helping people and strives to devote 20 per cent of her time to social service.
Mariwala spends a significant amount of time planning the menu because they must work with whatever ingredients arrive.
“It’s not like we buy anything. We cook with what we get. Once, we had bubblegum syrup, so we made bubblegum halwa, and the kids absolutely loved it. If we get cucumbers or fruit, we make fruit salad or fruit chaat. I once got 2,000 kilos of cornflakes, so I made cornflakes bhel. For me, that creative part is fun and it’s even more fun knowing that someone is going to eat it and truly enjoy it. All our food is made with love,” she says.

So you think less about yourself and your family, and more about the community,” says the hardware and software engineer.

#AngelsOfMumbai | 'My Mission And Vision Is About Education'
In the 1990s, when Asma Batliwala first began educating children, she had never imagined that three decades later she would have transformed the lives of thousands of students in underserved communities.
“I wanted to rethink education in marginalised communities. I wanted students not just to learn, but to be happy and enjoy studying. I wanted the classroom to be a space children looked forward to entering every day,” she explains.

#AngelsOfMumbai | 'We Were Giving Textbooks To Students They Would Return It, And Again Next Year We Would Give It To The Other People'
MES began its journey by lending school textbooks to students in underserved communities, offering educational and medical scholarships, and eventually building schools.
“We felt the need to do something that would help shape their entire outlook on life. That’s when the idea of starting a school emerged — a place where children would come to us, and we would have the opportunity to nurture their potential in every sphere, not just academics,” Dr Khatkhatay president, MES shared.

#AngelsOfMumbai | 'Don’t You Know Girls Don’t Go To School... Nobody’s Going To Teach Us, We’re Girls'
More than four decades ago, Rashmi Misra experienced something that deeply moved her, which cemented a lifelong commitment to education. Her husband, then a professor at IIT Delhi, and she lived on the institute’s campus which was separated from ‘real life’ by a wall.
Beyond the wall lay a slum area with a stagnant pool of dirty water where five little girls often played. One day, she asked them why they weren’t in school, to which one of the girls replied, “Don’t you know girls don’t go to school?” Misra asked if they wanted to study, and the girl responded, “Nobody’s going to teach us, we’re girls.”

#AngelsOfMumbai | We are thrilled to announce that The Free Press Journal's lovely illustrated children’s storybooks on real-life heroes were part of The Literature Live! The Mumbai LitFest, which is the city's first and biggest literature festival.
At The Little Festival, which is part of this fest but exclusively tailored for children, journalist and author Pooja Patel read the stories of Mumbai's changemakers who are featured in the book and under the special project Angels of Mumbai.
Around 100 enthusiastic children listened with rapt attention to the stories of Abodh Aras of The Welfare of Stray Dogs, Dharmesh Barai of Environment Life Foundation, Aabid Surti of Drop Dead Foundation, and Monisha Narke of RUR Greenlife.
The changemakers' stories left the young ones in awe, who took home the message that one can bring change in society even through their simplest and smallest acts.
