Birds are plentiful at the #AppledoreIsland Migration Station this morning. 60 or so (estimate) by 0800 and the humans haven’t even had breakfast yet!

Yesterday I left #AppledoreIsland and the #GullsOfAppledore research in the very capable hands of our summer research interns. Sad to leave them but excited for what research is to come!
This is an older (at least a 3rd year) Yellow Warbler that is breeding on #AppledoreIsland. Quite handsome indeed!
Scientific name is Setophaga petechia meaning “moth-eating red spots” (as in petechial skin spots). They are named, in part, for their red streaking.
#AppledoreIsland is home to the #ShoalsMarineLab & has its own microgrid. The lab uses a reverse osmosis machine for drinking water, an energy intensive process. On the mainland moving water and #wastewatertreatment are also energy intensive. #StarIslandsolararray
As a comment on the OT stated, we have a bit of a murder (un)mystery on #AppledoreIsland. A juvenile eagle has been on island for several days harassing our gulls. It moves around 2-3x each day but spends most time “hiding” in the veg. I’ll follow up w/ some eagle photos later.
Very happy hunting for the bald eagle hanging out on Appledore Island; it's taking the phrase "eat your heart out" quite literally when it comes to the #gullsofappledore.

Spoiler: it was a bit rough for several so was shorter than initially planned BUT they saw LOTS of Black Guillemots and some Northern Gannets.
