@Research_Owl I've been thinking about this. Will the floor for major gifts raise even further, to $1M? That would mean fewer major gift officers and more annual fund/digital gift officers, for sure. #ApraChat
And that wraps up another #ApraChat. Thanks to everyone who participated today, and @rissatodd, @SoleSearcherPR, @joesyak, @misasonrisa, @erejman, and @Research_Owl for driving the conversation!
A7: We perpetuate bias when we go about our daily work without questioning how our methods and approaches are embedded in historical inequality, e.g., how is real estate evaluated in our prioritization of donors? #ApraChat
A6: Being hyper-responsive is one of the bigger challenges, especially when there are a million things to do.
We have a tendency to drop everything when a major donor calls...
#ApraChat
A6: I sense wealthy donors are treated much differently than lower-gift-threshold donors, yet, shouldn't we treat all donors premised on their gift intent? #ApraChat
@erejman A nuanced reply, Liz.
We can't make assumptions about today's donors.
Perhaps they benefited from the very causes they're now in a position to support?
#ApraChat
@SoleSearcherPR It for sure requires a new level of training across the board. Facilitating that conversation requires different skills than catching a gift the donor already has in mind. #ApraChat
@misasonrisa Or the impact? We are throwing around the term "impact-based fundraising." #ApraChat
But as the major gift conversation gets more specific, the org has to be ready to pitch its own priorities that have been vetted by the community and stakeholders. This requires significant legwork. #ApraChat
@toastandcereal Yes! And not that we are in the business of changing minds, but we are in the business of selling. Again, a more adept fundraising work force can better shape, articulate, and sell the needs of the marginalized in a way that is compelling. Make it the donors idea! #ApraChat
The most valuable part of donor-centrism is the suggestion that we let the donor tell us what general area they're interested in philanthropically. A lot of institutions need to play catch-up on this, esp in higher ed where alumni status is used to box people in. #ApraChat
@toastandcereal I've seen many kind, generous (and smart!) donors know to give and then get out the way. They know they're not best placed to pass judgement / carry out the work.
#ApraChat
I think about this term a lot. It can be interpreted as "let the donor drive the gift conversation," which can result in older white people deciding the direction of our organizations, by virtue of what they choose to fund, especially at the transformational level. #ApraChat
@DataLover916 :-)
Staffing at many non-profits needs to be addressed.
It's not enough for an org to release a DEI statement welcoming applicants. It's much harder for them to "take a chance" on someone who doesn't look like them.
And to provide a sustainable environment.
#ApraChat
A4: There are levels of positionality that foremost should be acknowledged in these conversations #ApraChat
@DataLover916 Agreed - maybe all of us @Apra_HQ can think thoughtfully about ways to reach out to different communities to share and inform about all things #ProspectDevelopment?
#ApraChat
Yes, @SoleSearcherPR - I think you are onto something re: unrestricted dollars...but that also means orgs have to be employing the right people to make the most equitable decisions about how those funds are used. In an org setting, with revolving leadership - challening #ApraChat
What she said.
Unfortunately, philanthropy is still widely viewed and defined by how old, wealthy white men do it.
Philanthropy = helping a family member; volunteering at the kitty shelter; loving humankind
