@erejman Yes! and when we approach these same institutions for grants we find ourselves enmeshed in the same power dynamics we are calling out here about philanthropy #ApraChat
A7: We perpetuate bias when we go about our daily work without questioning how our methods and approaches are embedded in historical inequality, e.g., how is real estate evaluated in our prioritization of donors? #ApraChat
A6: I sense wealthy donors are treated much differently than lower-gift-threshold donors, yet, shouldn't we treat all donors premised on their gift intent? #ApraChat
I think about this term a lot. It can be interpreted as "let the donor drive the gift conversation," which can result in older white people deciding the direction of our organizations, by virtue of what they choose to fund, especially at the transformational level. #ApraChat
@misasonrisa Thanks Misa! More often there is a sense of paternalism involved in these conversations...are there ways folks can show up that acknowledge power dynamics? #Aprachat
Focus on populations that are served by the philanthropy/generosity.
Acknowledge they're the experts of their lived experiences.
They need to be involved in the solution making that philanthropy allows/provides.

Q2: If our western model of philanthropy is premised on inequality, how do we then address root causes in ways that provide equitable outcomes? #ApraChat
