I always knew I was different and this led to my passion for understanding people and the brain. I was looking for the “why.” Started grad school and read the DSM and recognized myself in the Aspie criteria. Thought this could be the “Why.” Worked with wonderfully ND and Autistic kids & adults in my career and had more in common with them than neurotypicals. I understood and vibed with Autistics, I did not vibe or understand NTs. After my third child was born all 3 of them wonderfully ND-bright, quirky, with sensory, social and learning differences- I knew this was not a coincidence. About 10 years ago I worked with a provider in the UK to confirm the “why” and they confirmed what I already knew. I was of a different neurotype. Not less. Just different. The validation and confirmation was life changing. Unfortunately, not many have the ability to get an evaluation for several reasons (cost, wait, gatekeeping, etc.) I believe that self diagnosis is valid. If you do seek an evaluation, though, please use a neurodiversity- affirming provider. 🧠
