In the summer of 1960, Jacksonville’s NAACP Youth Council led sit-ins protesting racial segregation, as pictured on the left of the mural. On August 27, #AxHandleSaturday, one of the sit-ins turned bloody and young demonstrators were chased with ax handles.
As we remember #AxHandleSaturday, a tragic day in Jacksonville history in which nonviolent racial protests turned bloody, we’re shining a light on the different components of the Eastside’s mural depicting the event (find it on A. Philip Randolph Blvd):
