In remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri dismissed a #US Embassy statement urging Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying it "speaks for itself, and I have nothing to add."
#Berri clarified that his own response was tied to #Aoun’s earlier remarks about coordination on negotiations, which explained his absence from a meeting with the president and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Questioning the validity of the US-sponsored ceasefire extension, Berri asked, "Where is this truce?" pointing to the continued Israeli attacks, the killing of civilians, and the targeting of medical teams.
He challenged Israeli allegations that those martyred were part of Hezbollah’s infrastructure, asking whether children, women, and the elderly fall under that label.
Berri warned that the so-called ceasefire has only allowed "Israel" to escalate its aggression while the US fails to enforce a halt, adding that as the sponsor, it has to "honor its commitment to the Lebanese and the international community."
"Otherwise, what is the point of negotiations under Israeli fire? And what would be said to the families of those killed in Israeli treachery in the South?" Berri stressed.
