#TechTuesday ~ Ocean and space explorers have much to learn from each other. On our #BackyardDeep cruise @NASA's ABISS lander served as a testbed for tech to study oceans on other worlds. Excited to host more cruises where software/robotics targeted for space missions are tested.

Wrong expedition.... Observed 40 miles off Southern California near Crespi Knoll. #BackyardDeep

#SciArtFriday (bit late) ~ From @CharlotteSeid: SNOW: a deep-sea nudibranch, perhaps a Tritonia sp. This snow-white sea slug was one highlight of #BackyardDeep expedition on #RVFalkor w/ @schmidtocean + @girguislab. We conducted this ROV dive exactly a year+1 day ago today... 1/2

This image of methane hydrate is beautiful! These ice-like solids are a crystalline lattice: molecules of gas trapped in a ‘cage’ of water molecules. Check out past expeditions for more info: #HuntingBubbles, #BackyardDeep, and #MicrobialMysteries, where this image is from.

Good gracious~ we almost missed #SeaSlugDay! Here is a lovely sea slug (or nudibranch), a soft-bodied mollusk researchers brought up during #backyarddeep cruise w/ @girguislab, @Harvard, @BigelowLab, @WHOI, @Occidental, @LamontEarth, @univienna

Great to see they have a program too!

Beautiful portraits by @jejebah of some of the biological samples from the #BackyardDeep expedition. For full captions and ID's please check out our recent @instagram post. https://t.co/odhFiA9reF

Looking back on the #BackyardDeep expedition, #ArtistAtSea Lily Simonson working with ROV SuBastian to paint is highlight!
"...The experience of truly collaborating—not just with other people, but with a robot—was transformative." https://t.co/pWUnzezmtZ
As the #BackyardDeep expedition wraps up, PI Dr. @pgirguis discusses both the accomplishments of this research cruise AND how they all fit together, through a continuum of human inquiry. Plus beautiful pics ~ Worth checking out!

New #4K highlights from #ROV #SuBastian footage during #BackyardDeep expedition. Hydrothermal vents and hydrocarbon seeps are an important subject of oceanographic research: we've only known about them for ~35 years, there is still so much to learn! https://t.co/ULlu5zrlNa
