Agreed. โญ๏ธ ๐ฏ Here in #bced literacy leadership at the highest level matters @lisabeare and @Dave_Eby. Please ensure people with the knowledge are leading the leaders. The ties to #BalancedLiteracy run deep, are entrenched and are very pervasive.
New York is a cautionary tale.
You can invest millions in โscience of reading,โ but if the wrong people are leading it, you risk recreating the same failed systems under a new name.
Leadership isnโt optional. Itโs everything.

Who wants to tell @Ed_Realist *all* the ways that Columbia University, Teachers College, #TCRWP, Lucy Calkins, Heinemann Publishing, the NEA, the AFT, union-controlled School Board members (who rubber stamped Lucyโs whack-a-doodle theories and Units of Study #BalancedLiteracy curriculum), et al have harmed innocent children since 1981?
Iโm ๐ค๐ป hoping this is a game changer for my library system- putting the sticker on the INSIDE cover, as opposed to the outside. They never stay on! #fcpsvanguard #balancedliteracy #booklover #classroomlibrary ๐

Every parent who was forced to pull their special needs child from #publicschool because the admin only used #BalancedLiteracy & refused to listen when parents begged for Orton Gillingham deserves an apology at the very least.
Weโre here. Anytime. You know better now.

Everyone should know the inconvenient truths about #BalancedLiteracy - a fair weathered friend from Prof @PamelaSnow2 from @latrobe at Sharing Best Practice #SBPHighCountry
I hear from #BalancedLiteracy advocates all the time about how they are meeting the needs of their students. When I ask if theyโve ever taught using a structured literacy approach they often scoff. We donโt know what we donโt know. #KnowBetterDoBetter
When you teach one (or more) sibling(s) in kindergarten with a balanced literacy approach, and a few years later teach another with a structured literacy approach! #KnowBetterDoBetter #ThankfulForSupportiveParents
The #BalancedLiteracy defenders are getting desperate as their house of cards is falling.
@troyschools @RMMachesky @KarlSchmidtTSD the more you defend this #curriculum the worse it will make TSD look when you are the only ones left in #MI using it!
Major backtrack by @ILAToday after widely-derided column by Paul Thomas and other Balanced Literacy defenders.

The anecdote at the beginning of this article is a *perfect* example of why schools fail to teach so many children to read.
The authors understand that phonics is an important part of reading instruction.
(Thank you National Reading Panel.)
HOWEVER...
Sign @read4berkeley's petition to send the message loud and clear that #BerkeleyUSD children deserve better than #balancedliteracy!

@BenisonMrs I remember sustained silent reading (SSR) & drop everything and read (DEAR) from when my kids (now 20 & 24 yrs old) were in school. Fortunately I taught them to decode & they were good readers. But so many others weren't. Their school was a #balancedliteracy stronghold. ๐ช
My story on the state of reading instruction in #vted is finally in the world. As a former elementary teacher trained in #balancedliteracy โ who never really knew how to teach kids to read โ reporting this article led to great introspection.

@BenisonMrs True. I've seen this in Title I schools I've partnered with for research. Too many students need #intervention & not enough resources to provide for all. Many students are "watch and wait" b/c of that. Add to it that #schools used #balancedliteracy, which exacerbated the problem.
