#BREAKING: #Puntland Issues Statement on Seized Arms Ship SEA World
The Puntland regional administration in #Somalia has released a new statement regarding the vessel SEA World, which was recently seized off the coast of #Bareeda in the #Bari region. The ship is reportedly carrying military-grade weapons.
Authorities say investigations into the ship’s cargo and ownership are ongoing amid conflicting claims. Puntland officials stated they were "contacted" by businessmen from #Mogadishu "claiming ownership of the cargo," as well as by the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, "who asserted that the shipment belongs to #Turkey."
The statement emphasized that the investigation is still underway and welcomed both the Turkish government and Somalia’s Federal Government to participate in the process. Puntland stressed the importance of "ensuring" the weapons do not fall into the "wrong hands."
Earlier today, the Federal Government of Somalia accused Puntland of "hijacking" the vessel, claiming it was carrying arms and military equipment intended for the Turkish-run #TURKSOM training camp in #Mogadishu.

#BREAKING: Authorities in #Somalia’s #Puntland regional state have released a preliminary report revealing that a foreign vessel named SEA WORLD allegedly entered Somali territorial waters near the coastal town of #Bareeda “without proper authorization” or “communication.”
According to the Puntland Ministry of Information, the vessel remained in Puntland waters for two days without notifying local authorities or requesting emergency assistance—“violating” key provisions of international maritime law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (#UNCLOS 1982). Specifically, Puntland officials cite breaches of Article 19(2)(b) and (g), which prohibit unauthorized foreign military or intelligence-related activities in the territorial sea of another state.
Authorities also noted that SEA WORLD was reportedly carrying “visible weaponry,” raising alarms about its intentions. The vessel’s presence occurred in “a high-risk security zone” where Puntland forces have been conducting ongoing operations against ISIS-affiliated militants. This has heightened concerns about the ship’s purpose and potential “threat” to regional stability.
International protocols require states to notify relevant governments when entering their territorial waters, particularly in cases involving military or potentially hazardous cargo. Puntland officials say no such “communication” was received from the vessel or its operators.
In response, the Puntland administration has launched a formal investigation to determine the vessel’s “origin,” “ownership,” “cargo,” and “objectives.” Officials emphasized that Puntland retains the right—under Articles 25(1) and 27(1) of UNCLOS—to inspect and take appropriate action against unauthorized vessels in its territorial waters.
The statement warned that if the investigation confirms “violations,” those responsible will be held accountable under both national and international law.
