Here’s the special document that started it all. The Batley Charter, sealed by Queen Victoria, and the first Batley minute book. #Batley150

The @BatleyPoets produced a book of local poems to celebrate #Batley150. It’s available to buy from Batley Library. We’re hearing from @muhmdibneahmd who has been on a tour everywhere from local benches to parliament (and even to Dewsbury) sharing poetry from Batley.

With the powers granted by the Batley Charter of Incorporation, work could begin on establishing a market place, building reservoirs and improving the transport infrastructure. #Batley150

We’re hearing from. @wyorksarchives archivist Robert Clegg. In the 19th century, the population of Batley doubled every 20 years. As the town grew, residents began to want more powers over what happened locally. Thousands petitioned for borough status. #Batley150

“I’ve got my school jotter from when I was 11. It includes a list of 10 things I wanted to do. And I did some of them. You could too. You can’t take Batley from my heart. Enjoy every minute of being 10 or 11 and be proud of Batley.” #Batley150

We’re now hearing from members of @BatleyHistory about how the creation of shoddy (recycling before its time) led to more mills, more jobs and more prosperity for the town and people of Batley. #Batley150

“People need to be recognised when they do a good job.” Cllr Yusra Hussain says that telling positive stories about our communities matters, and councillors can help with that. #Batley150 @beacouncillor
