While I think that the GC should probably have remained open, and rightly #Marples is the greater villian in the piece (much more so that #Beeching), you can't compare the #GreatCentral to #HS2. If you liken it to the internet, the GC is an old copper line, HS2 would be fibre...

With typically myopic stupidity, HMG / #Beeching closed the alternative mainline railway in 1968... much as @RishiSunak #Beeching2 has seen fit to 'cancel' our next major railway upgrade: #HS2.

The only rail connection from South Devon and Cornwall to the rest of the UK. The GWR knew in the 1930s that this was not sustainable for a main line railway, yet here we are in 2023 still totally reliant on it.
