Hi everyone! I am a clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor at @SouthernMiss studying psychological distress and their biological consequences in cancer patients and survivors - nice to โmeetโ you all! #BehavioralMedChat
If you're tuning in for our #CancerSIG #BehavioralMedChat on mental health in cancer care, please introduce yourself! (If you're just here to read and watch, you can just tweet the hashtag #BehavioralMedChat!)
A4. The battle analogies with cancer are annoying.
Nobody loses their battle. When a person dies the cancer dies with them. That's a draw.
People don't fail. Treatment does.
Battle language shifts the onus to the patient to fight, not for treatment to work.

A6. One of the things often overlooked in mental health support is the need for connection.
All of the apps in the world won't do any good if there isn't another human on the other end.
The self-serve stuff always just seems further isolating to me.

A6. I think a lot of mental health support needs to consider patients that are continuing to work through treatment.
All this talk about patient-centred care and meeting people where they are.
But everything happens 9am-5pm.

We're out of time, but don't let that stop you from continuing the #BehavioralMedChat #cancerSIG conversation! Thanks for joining us and special thanks to guests

A6. An ideal mental health support system looks like:
๐ Support at time of Dx
๐ Support for caregiver(s)
๐ Support after NED
๐ Support if undergoing systemic treatment

@BehavioralMed Stay tuned for results... coming in a year or two... ah, the slow pace of research ๐

We are now approaching the end of today's chat. One final question for the panelist.
Q6. What would an ideal mental health support system for cancer patients look like?
#BehavioralMedChat #cancerSIG @SBMCancerSIG

@BehavioralMed I'm working on a study now where we text people to ask how they are feeling in that exact moment! We're asking about anxiety and depression. I hope that in the future it could help us develop responsive interventions that can help in the moment! #BehavioralMedChat
A5. I haven't really used many digital tools.
I find a lot of apps annoying. I'm not interested in putting in my mood every day. That doesn't help me.
The best ones have been Zoom, Twitter, and Facebook.

@thatlauraruby @BehavioralMed Yeah, Google can lead you down a deeeeep rabbit hole when it comes to cancer.... #BehavioralMedChat
@thatlauraruby @BehavioralMed I've heard folks have similar reactions to the word "brave" - saying that bravery implies a choice, and they didn't choose to be in this situation! #BehavioralMedChat
@BehavioralMed If I'm being honest, I haven't done a great job at using digital tools. I know they are there and have every intention of using them, but it's been hard while doing teletherapy since I can't sit next to the patient and show them how to use it on their phone. #BehavioralMedChat
@CancerCanuck @BehavioralMed Absolutely! add in sexual health and intimacy to that list -- it often can take a huge hit and can be difficult for patients, partners, and clinicians to discuss! #behavioralmedchat
Q5. Researchers/Clinicians โ What digital tools have you used for mental health needs of cancer patients? How have you used those tools?
Patientsโ What digital tools have you used to manage your mental health? What has been your experience with those tools?

@DrLaurenZimmaro @BehavioralMed The impact on relationships can be huge!
Financial.
Fertility.
Ability.
Emotionally.
I'm lucky to have a strong, capable partner, but cancer breaks a lot of relationships.
#behavioralmedchat
@CancerCanuck Or the opposite! One thing that I've heard sometimes was minimizing depression in particular for people with cancer - like "of course you're depressed, you have cancer!"
Ummmm no, that's not how this works. #BehavioralMedChat
@DrClaireC @BehavioralMed This is a big thing in Canada. There are federal and provincial bureaucratic gatekeepers to various approvals. It slows things down for patients.
