From aspiring in high school to join a power generation company being constructed near his home, to ultimately becoming the first electrical engineer in his community, Eng. Akuto’s journey is a testament to determination, curiosity, and the power of possibility.
Today, he reflects on the experiences that fuel his passion for engineering, his love for sports, and his vision for the future of electricity transmission in Kenya and the region beyond.
Eng. Akuto also underscores the critical role of teamwork, both within technical teams and through strong stakeholder engagement, in ensuring operational excellence, system reliability, and sustainable growth.

#BehindtheGrid: Meet Eng. Ruth Njuguna, Senior Engineer, SCADA at KETRACO. Ruth's journey is a story of growth, moving from early dreams of becoming a medical doctor to mastering the engineering software that keeps your homes powered.
Since joining #teamKETRACO in 2014 as a graduate engineer, she has grown and been refined through her experiences to become one of the company's talented SCADA engineers.
Today, as a Senior SCADA Engineer, she actively strengthens and extends the national electricity transmission grid, aiming to enhance the quality, reliability, and stability of the electricity supply that drives the country's progress.
Eng. Ruth has worked on various projects across the country; her portfolio includes transmission lines and respective substations, like Isiolo-Meru 132 kV, 132 kV Kindaruma-Mwingi-Garissa, 132 kV Kegati-Awendo, 132 kV Awendo-Ndhiwa , 132 kV Isinya-Namanga, 220 kV Isinya–Athi River, 400 kV Isinya–Suswa, Suswa 220 kV substation, Machakos–Konza, Olkaria–Lessos–Kisumu (Kibos), 220 kV Turkwel–Ortum–Kitale, and most recently was part of the team that energized the 132 kV Awendo–Isebania project.

#BehindTheGrid: Meet Eng. Njeri Nthiga, Electrical Engineer at KETRACO. For the past 14 years, Eng. Njeri has played a critical role in delivering key electricity transmission infrastructure across the country, including the ongoing 132kV underground cable projects — Nanyuki–Rumuruti and Nanyuki–Isiolo.
Once complete, the project will form a ring system around the Mt. Kenya region, enabling Nanyuki town and surrounding load centres to receive power from both the Kamburu and Masinga hydro power plants.
This will significantly enhance power stability and reliability across Meru, Isiolo, Nanyuki, Kiganjo, and Rumuruti, while meeting the region’s growing electricity demand.
We celebrate Eng. Njeri and the entire #TeamKETRACO for their dedication in delivering this transformative project.
